Welcome to this DIY where I will be showing you how to turn a normal t-shirt into a cute bow sleeve top. We will be doing a little adaptation of a normal t-shirt which is really easy to do.

There is no sewing required - all you need is a t-shirt and scissors and that’s it! Let’s jump on in.

Tools and materials:

  • T-shirt
  • Scissors
Cutting off the bottom

1. Cut off the bottom of the top

Start by cutting off the base of the t-shirt below the seam line. Make sure to cut close to the stitching so that the t-shirt will look normal to wear and there won't be any fraying.

You may think that that strip of fabric you’re cutting is really thin, but it only needs to be thin as it’s just to make the middle bit of the bow.

Cut all the way around the t-shirt. You will be left with your t-shirt and a ring of material from the bottom.

2. Cut the sleeves

Next, cut down from the top of the sleeve towards the armpit, again close to the seam.

Make a cut of about 2-2.5 inches (5-6cm) and make sure it goes through both sides of the sleeve.

Progress shot

Once done, your sleeves will look like this.

Gathering the middle of the sleeves

3. Gather the middle of the sleeves

So, the open part of the sleeve is where your shoulders will go and then the bow will sit on your arm.

If you gather the material, you can start to see the formation of the bow.

Cutting the fabric band

4. Cut the band of fabric

The band of fabric that you cut will be the middle part of the bow for both sleeves, so you want to cut it into two.

Cut it along the seam lines of the t-shirt. Now you have two separate pieces of fabric.

Tying the fabric around the sleeves

5. Tie the fabric around the sleeves

Pinch the sleeves in the middle to gather the material. Then wrap the fabric around the middle of the bows a few times to make the bow secure and tie a knot.

If you want it to be extra secure you can get a needle and thread and sew it but I’m not going to do that.

Tying the bow

6. Tie a bow

Proceed to make a bow on top of the knot, so you will have another bow on top of the bow sleeves.
