How to Sew a Cute Christmas Crop Top
If you're looking to make a cute Christmas outfit, I have just the project for you. I'm going to show you how to make this Christmas crop top.
I had some beautiful fabric and that inspired me to make this red plaid crop top, using a top I already had as a pattern.
Follow along to see how I made my DIY Christmas outfit.
Tools and materials:
- Red plaid fabric
- Buttons
- Crop top to use as a pattern
- Tailor's chalk
- Pins
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
1. Make pattern
I folded my fabric right sides together and opened out my crop top on it. This top has a shaped front and a straight back.
I drew around the front pieces of my top with chalk, making sure my pattern was aligned with the straight grain of the fabric.
2. Cut fabric
I wanted my top to be double thickness, so I cut 2 layers for each front and cut the back piece from two double folded layers.
I cut two straps, each 13 inches (33 cm) wide and 1 inch (2.4 cm) long.
3. Join pieces
I sewed the longer edge of each top front to the lower band.
Then I sewed the shorter edge of the top to the short edge of the back on each side.
I did this on the inner and outer parts of the top separately.
I put the lining and outer parts together, right sides facing, and sewed them around the side and top edges.
4. Hem lower edge
I turned my top right side out, turned in a hem on each lower edge and sewed them together.
5. Attach straps
I folded the straps in half lengthways, right sides facing, and sewed them then turned them right side out.
I folded the front pieces into the center, overlapped them and pinned them together. Then, I pinned and sewed the straps in place on the inside.
6. Buttons and buttonholes
I used 5 large buttons for my plaid crop top, so I laid them out on the front and checked they were equally spaced.
I marked the position of my buttonholes and checked they were large enough for the buttons.
I made my buttonholes on my machine, but you can make them by hand if you prefer. Then I handsewed the buttons on.
Christmas crop top
You can wear a top like this casually with jeans or dress it up with a smart skirt or pair of pants.
In warmer weather, it will even work with shorts. It's sexy and flattering, but not too revealing. If you enjoyed my DIY crop top ideas, I'd love it if you'd let me know in the comments.
