Vintage Scarf Band DIY

I’ve always appreciated the look of a classic watch face. Crisp and clean makes a watch both purposeful and, at the risk of sounding cliché, timeless. While the normal look of a Daniel Wellington watch is iconic, I wanted to personalize this wardrobe staple; but usually the thick and comfortable leather straps link well with any outfit. I recently I saw a pin on Pinterest that peaked my interest in the world of watch band DIY. This consisted of a simple Hermés scarf tied as a bracelet and watch band, so chic.

I wanted to create the same colorful look with one of my own silk scarves, which at this point you’re probably thinking – this girl has an issue. & you’re right I totally do 🙂 If you stay tuned this winter you’ll also see that I have no intention or desire to stop using these colorful & unique DIY goldmines. Full tutorial on this little number is below:

Vintage Watch Band Instructions

Removing the strap

To start this simple and easy do it yourself tutorial, simply visit Daniel Wellington’s site and watch t he short instructional video on how to remove the leather bands without damaging the integrity of the watch. They use a watch tool, but I found that a sewing pin & a nail head (for re-insertion) did the trick. I would note that this tool, or a quick visit to the jeweler, would have avoided a mild frustration – read below.

Inserting the Pins

Next, re-insert the metal pins. This is the part that was slightly frustrating and the tool would come in handy. Because Daniel Wellington’s watches are so well made, the spring in the pin is quite strong and kept snapping back – making it difficult to re-insert with just a nail head.

Threading the Scarf

Thread the scarp as seen below: up and through the back of the watch face. This is why a skinny scarf works best for this DIY.

Styling & Wear

Wrap & knot the scarf as seen below to desired tightness 🙂 Styling this beauty was pretty easy. I used colors that paired well with the silk scarf, since the classic watch face paired well with just about anything.

I love this idea and thank you very much! I recently bought Twilleys for a pair of shoes that had a basic strap but with Covid and all I didn’t really get out much. So there they sit 🤦‍♀️ Your idea gives them a whole new life! Genius!
