90’s Inspired High Waisted Pants
I have always loved 90’s fashion! This sewing project gave me the perfect opportunity to make an amazing pair of vintage-style pants. I love everything about these pants from the silky fabric to the high-waist cut! Follow along as I sew these 90’s inspired pants!
Tools and materials:
- Fabric
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Ruler
- Chalk
- Pins
- Sewing machine
- ZIpper
To get started, you can either create your own pattern or use a pair of pants you already have as a template for tracing.
For this project, I chose a gorgeous, silky fabric.
Mark and cut the fabric
I then went ahead and laid out a folded piece of fabric. I grabbed a ruler and chalk and started marking. To see my exact measurements go to 2:30 in the video. I then took scissors and cut.
Sew pleats and darts
I started the sewing process, by stitching a 4-inch pleat on the front of the pants.
Next, I sewed a 4 inch wide, 5-inch long dart on the back waistline of the pants.
Attach the pockets
I then moved onto the side pockets. To see exact measurements go to 3:28 in the video. I placed the unfolded pocket edge along the edge of the pants and stitched on the long side. I folded over the pocket fabric and stitched, leaving a gap for my hand to fit through.
Attach the zipper
It was time to attach the zipper, I zig-zag stitched the raw edges before stitching on the zipper.
Sew the pants closed
Next, I went ahead and sewed the inner seams of the pants closed.
Add the waistband
I also had to make a waistband for the pants. I cut a strip long enough to fit around my waist and about 2.5-3 inches long.
After sewing one long end, I pinned the waistband to the pants and stitched.
I made sure to hem the bottom of the pants to get a clean finish for my vintage-style pants.
I love the fact that these 90’s inspired pants are high waisted!
The pleats also add so much to these pants and give them the perfect fit and flow.
I love how easy it is to style these pants! They can easily transition from day to nightwear! How would you style these pants? Let me know in the comments below!

I really like the idea of high waisted pants. As low as the pants are and as short as the shirts are I can't bend over without showing my waist or underwear. I've been tempted to buy boxer shorts like the "boyz" to cover that area. I was told by one guy at the bus stop that another one was staring down my pants.
Every woman needs a pair of high waisted pants.
I am short waisted and love a high waist on pants. I also have short legs which will provide the extra fabric!
Thanks!
