Today’s project was inspired by something I saw my sister wearing on vacation. We’re going to be making DIY barefoot sandals, which are essentially just the top of a sandal without the sole. You can make a cute pair to wear for a weekend at the shore, or an elegant pair that could be perfect for a beach wedding. This is a super quick and easy project, and your final result will be a couple of really cool and unique pieces of jewelry. So let’s get started.

Tools and materials:

  • Glass beads
  • Tube bead
  • 2 4-6 mm beads
  • Clear nylon cord
  • Needle
  • Scissors

Thread the needle

Thread your needle with the plastic cord and tie a knot at the end.

How to make barefoot sandals

Start beading

Starting with a large bead, start sliding the beads onto the needle and down the wire in whatever pattern you like. The large bead is important because that is going to be part of your clasp, once the project is complete.

Add tube bead

Keep beading until the string of beads can reach from the back of your ankle until about ½ an inch under your big toe. At this point, you should add your tube bead and another larger bead. Then, continue beading with the small beads until the length of beading after the tube bead can fit comfortably around your big toe.

Make a loop

Once you have enough beading at the end to go around your big toe, take your needle, and insert it back through the large bead and the tube bead, creating a loop of beads above the large bead.

Continue beading

After making the toe loop, continue with your pattern until the string of beads reaches the back of your ankle.

Make a small loop

When your string of beads is long enough, insert your needle back through two of the small beads an inch or two from the end. The loop you make should be wide enough to fit the large bead at the end through it and be able to hold it securely.

Knot and cut

Then, just knot the cord and cut off any excess, and you’re done!

Now all you have to do is make a second one, and you will have a pair of beautiful beaded barefoot sandals!

Will you use this tutorial to make barefoot sandals of your own? What patterns and colors will you use?

I like it the other way around. I have a sole w/o the top. However, if you get sand on them, they no longer stick to your foot. I cleaned them off and used my quilting basting spray glue to refresh. Now I can use them by the pool.
