6 Elegant Audrey Hepburn Scarf Styles & How to Wear Them

As well as being a talented actress, Audrey Hepburn was a style icon and was particularly known for the way she styled her scarves.

In this style guide, I’m going to let you recreate her classic and elegant looks by showing you how to replicate Audrey Hepburn's scarf styles.

“Elegance is the only beauty that never fades” - Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn & her scarves

In 1948, aged just 19, Audrey Hepburn made her first professional appearance as a chorus girl in the musical High Button Shoes in London.

The lead dancer in the show later commented on her appearance. She had one skirt, one blouse, and one pair of shoes, but she had 14 scarves and styled them in different ways week by week.

Step 1 - Place around neck

Fold your scarf into a band and place it around your neck asymmetrically, so that one side is longer than the other. I'm wearing an Hermès scarf size 35” x 35”.

Step 2 - Wrap around

Take the longer side and bring it across your shoulder on the opposite side.

Step 3 - Tie the other side

Take the shorter side and pull it through the knot. Then tuck it behind the longer piece.

The strong vertical line of this style makes a bold statement and feels very masculine.

3. Folded tie scarf

For this next style, use a thin, oblong-shaped scarf. I'm using an oblong silk scarf by Anne Klein, size 59” x 8”.

Place the scarf around your neck, with one side hanging longer than the other.

Step 3 - Tie a knot

Finish off by tying a knot at the front. When you tie the knot, however, only pull one of the sides out partially so that it has a loop effect.

Feminine and elegant Audrey Hepburn scarf style

This style of scarf looks gorgeous! It's very feminine.

4. Headscarf knotted under the chin

Audrey Hepburn knew that a well-chosen accessory could highlight a facial feature or extend the neckline. She wore small silk scarves knotted under her chin both on and off-camera.

Audrey’s hair accessory complemented the simplicity of her outfits. She once said, “When I wear a silk scarf, I never feel so definitely like a woman, a beautiful woman.”

Now I’m going to show you how to style Audrey Hepburn’s headscarf as well as hat and scarf looks. Audrey mostly chose to wear petite-style scarves on her head.

To create this look, simply take a square scarf, fold it in half, place it over your head and tie it securely under your chin with a double knot. I'm wearing a small vintage scarf 26” x 26”.

Wear your scarf with a trench coat and sunglasses for a timelessly stylish Audrey look.

Here is the same look but with a wool scarf. Just as beautiful.

5. Tie-back headscarf

The tie-back headscarf is probably the one we associate Audrey with the most.

To achieve this look, simply fold the scarf in half as you did before and place it on your head.

Take the two ends, cross them over each other at the front, then bring them round to the back of your head and tie a knot at the side.

6. Breakfast at Tiffany's scarf around a hat

It has been said that Audrey’s Givenchy dress in Breakfast at Tiffany's was a defining look of the 20th century. We can try to attain her look with minimal jewelry and a hat with a scarf tied around it.

Audrey never saw herself as a fashion symbol but made us believe elegance could be within our reach.

“My look is attainable,” she said, and many tried to emulate her style by wearing sunglasses with a little sleeveless dress.
