Can You Make a DIY Outfit Out of a 5-Pack of Tube Socks?
Have you ever wondered what you can make with a pair of socks? This is a DIY outfit experiment using a 5-pack of socks to make a sock top and shorts. I know it sounds a bit wild to use socks to make an outfit but suspend your disbelief. Come along with me and learn how to make an outfit out of socks.
Tools and materials:
- 5-pack of tube socks
- Scissors
- Pins
- Sewing machine
- Serger
- Your own shorts
1. Cut the socks
Cut the socks off at the end of the ribbing if your socks have them. Cut at the ankle, making sure the tubes are equal in size.
Cut along the fold of each tube. Keep the sock logos intact.
Trim the tops that keep the socks up on your legs.
You’ll have a lot of pieces.
2. Make the shorts
Use your own well-fitting shorts as a template. If you’re able to seam rip your shorts into a front and back piece, use those pieces to make the pattern. If you don’t, fold your shorts in half along the center in the front and then again the other way for the back with the crotch pulled out. The back piece always has a longer crotch.
Arrange the socks pieces to fit your shorts template until you have enough pieces to make the pattern. You will need to cut smaller pieces for the crotch area. You’ll need to make 2 front and 2 back pieces. Pin the pieces in place.
Serge them right sides together using a patchwork technique. Recheck that your pieces match your shorts template.
Trim any excess.
3. Sew the shorts
Match the 2 back pieces and pin along the center seam. Do the same for the front pieces. Sew together.
Then match the front and back pieces and sew the side seams and crotch.
Even out the waistband and legs.
Hem the legs and the waistband with a single fold, sewing it down with a zigzag stitch.
4. Make the top
Put the smaller logo pieces of the socks together for the front. Pin and sew together using a patchwork technique. Make sure you use enough socks to fit your bust. Once you have the front and back piece, place them right sides together. Sew with a zigzag stitch.
Fold over the top to hem and stitch to secure.
If your logos are too close to the top and you aren’t able to hem it properly, use any leftover plain sock fabric to make straps. Cut into 4 equal-sized strips. Sew two straps by placing them right sides together. Make a tiny hem along the top. Square stitch the straps into place.
Making a DIY outfit out of socks
Although the sock top is ok, the shorts are the clear winner here.
I wasn’t too happy with the top’s fit but the shorts are super comfy and fit great.

I stuffed my 'socks' with rocks in the toe, tied them off and used them for 'TOSS'
game. Kids love it! Each had their own color! NOW . . . that's a good use for old socks!
This is an outfit? One more pack of socks, and maybe a completed top?
