How to Make a Cute DIY Square Neck Top Out of a Long-Sleeved T-Shirt

Tools and materials:

• Long-sleeved top
• Sewing machine
• Scissors
• Matching thread
• Ruler
• Marker
• Pins

1. Cut the sleeves

With a marker and ruler, measure your desired length for the sleeves, mark it down, and cut away with no regrets! 

Repeat the process on the other side. To get the sleeve size symmetrical, place the cut-out excess sleeve on the other sleeve and use it as a guide when cutting.

2. Mark the square neckline

Ok, it’s time to cut the neckline for this DIY square neck top.

Using a ruler and marker, draw a line across the chest, right under the collar area. Try not to go too low as you may have fabric flopping over in front. 

Tip: Make sure this line is centered, and both ends of the lines are X inches away from the sides of the top, respectively. 

When drawing up the sides, slightly slant the line outward on each side. 

3. Cut out the neckline

Cut along the marked lines and through both layers. 

Then, make a tiny snip on each corner, as shown. 

4. Hem the raw edges

It’s time to finish off the neckline. Before you get started, set your machine to the same setting as mine (number 10 as shown above). Also, make sure to fold your top wrong sides out. 

Fold the raw edge over once (to the right side) and place pins as you go along. Now, sew all around to secure the hem. 

I had a little mishap while sewing. Unfortunately, the top’s fabric was not compatible with my machine and my footer broke. I had to hand stitch the rest of the hem.

So, be sure your fabric is compatible before making the same mistake as me. 

It was a little tedious doing the hem by hand, but I finally got it done!
