Ever since being bombarded by amazing fashion photos from Coachella, I have been wanting a fringe vest. But they are kind of expensive, so I decided to try and make one myself using faux suede.

Tools and materials:

  • 2 1/2 feet faux suede
  • Rotary cutter
  • Pins
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Needles
  • Vest
  • Tailor’s chalk
  • Cutting board
Make a DIY fringe vest

How to make a DIY fringe vest

Cut out your fabric

Lay a vest you already own (and like the fit of) onto your fabric and use some tailor’s chalk to trace it out. This will be the template for your vest. Use a vest that’s a little bigger on you and remember to include seam allowance so that it won’t be too tight. Once you’ve traced your vest, use some scissors to cut out your fabric. Repeat the tracing process for the front of the jacket to make your two front panels. To do this, trace half the vest, cut it out and use that as a template for the other half. Don’t cut the panels off at the bottom of the vest. Instead, extend all three panels all the way to the bottom of the fabric to allow for the fringe.

Cut your fringe

Mark on your vest where you want the fringe to end and then begin to cut your fabric until that point. Make sure to use a cutting mat to ensure the fringe all comes out the same width. Do this with a rotary cutter (and not scissors) to keep the measurements as precise as possible.

Connect the vest

Place your three panels together, wrong sides together, and pin them in place. Next, hand sew the shoulders and sides to secure the vest. (If, like me, you found that your vest was a little too snug after sewing, simply cut open the armholes a little more to help it lay better). Once that’s done, trim off any excess fabric on the seams. (Again, if you, like me forgot to extend the back panel, cut out your fringe now and use some fabric glue to attach it to the vest).

Adjust the length of the vest as you see fit and enjoy an easy, cheaper, basic DIY fringe vest.
