This recipe for green tea hyaluronic serum is not only easy to make, but it’s also an affordable way to get started making your own DIY beauty products. There are many skin care benefits associated with hyaluronic acid and green tea.

This article explores the advantages of incorporating this beauty treatment into your daily routine to fight aging and promote youthful looking skin. I also teach you how to make your own green tea skin care products at home.

What’s Inside the Green Tea Serum Skin Care Kit

This DIY skin care kit from Brambleberry comes with everything you need to get started to make hyaluronic acid serum at home! However, if desired, you can also purchase the ingredients and supplies needed for this project separately to create your own custom formulation.

Here’s what’s inside this green tea beauty serum kit:

  • Water soluble green tea extract
  • Aloe vera concentrate
  • Hyaluronic acid serum base
  • Frosted glass bottles with droppers
  • Graduated transfer pipettes
  • Instructions
  • Sticker label sheet

As this kit contains both the ingredients and most of the tools you need to make this project, you really don’t need much more! You will need a measuring cup or container with a pour spout. I also recommend that you use a small funnel to avoid spills when pouring this green tea serum into the frosted glass bottles. You’ll also need scissors to cut out the sticker labels.

The price for this DIY beauty kit is extremely reasonable. The kit makes four bottles of green tea hyaluronic acid serum. So you have enough for yourself with extras to gift to friends and family. It even includes free shipping to the lower contiguous 48 states. So, for about $11.25 a bottle, you get to enjoy the experience of making a new craft. Plus, you save money over purchasing pre-made solutions in which formulations typically cost $20 and up.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is also called hyaluronan or a hyaluronate. It is an anionic, nonsulfated glycosaminoglycan that is present in connective tissue in the body and found in eyes, skin and joints. Historically described as a goo molecule prior to the 1970s, this slippery substance is naturally produced by the body coating the cells of articular cartilage. In addition, it also lubricates the muscular connective tissues. As a major component of skin, hyaluronan is involved in the repair of skin tissue.

Hyaluronic acid is often taken as supplement to restore its loss. As both UV exposure and age can reduce the production of hyaluronan in the body. This compound may be taken orally or applied topically to skin. It is also sometimes injected or inhaled depending on what condition is being treated.

Medically, it may be used to treat osteoarthritis of the knees and in products that treat dry eye for the purpose of creating artificial tears. It is sometimes inhaled to treat asthma or breathing issues. However, it is most commonly used for skin care applications. While it is an ingredient found in fillers that are injected into skin, it’s also used as an ingredient in a number of topically applied beauty products to plump skin and restore hydration.

Hyaluronic Serum Benefits

Hyaluronic acid is commonly used as an ingredient in a number of skin care applications to address aging or dry skin as well as for medical applications. Here are the skin benefits of using a hyaluronic serum:

  • As it plays a key role in tissue regeneration, inflammation response, and angiogenesis, hyaluronic acid may help promote healing of chronic wounds, burns and ulcers. While its effects may be limited and more research is needed, they do illustrate that hyaluronic acid is effective at reducing pain cause by ulcers.
  • Because hyaluronic acid plays such an important role when it comes to our epidermis, or the outer layer of skin, it assists with healing skin.
  • Its antioxidant properties help protect skin from outside elements such as solar radiation. When combined with retinoids, a form of vitamin A, it also increases hydration of skin tissue.
  • Serums made with hyaluronic acid hydrates skin so it looks plump and more youthful. By keeping skin hydrated, you’re less likely to experience dry skin. It can also minimize the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Its low molecular weight mean it’s easily absorbed by skin. This allows it to lock in moisture and slow down the visible signs of aging.
  • It can be combined with other ingredients in DIY beauty serums to also tackle other skin care concerns, such as reducing inflammation or exfoliating skin.
  • DIY beauty serums formulated with hyaluronic acid, such as my green tea serum, help improve skin elasticity.

What Does Hyaluronic Acid Do to Your Face?

As hyaluronic acid helps skin cells attract and retain moisture, it helps skin look and feel hydrated when it’s applied to your face. When skin is properly hydrated, it will make your face look plump and pillowy. This in turn helps to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It may also help to shield skin from free radicals and pollutants that age skin. So, skin looks radiant. After all, don’t we all want beautiful, glowing skin?

Green Tea Skin Care Benefits

Like hyaluronic acid, green tea also has a number of benefits for skin. Here are just a few of the ways using green tea in your skin care routine can promote healthy looking skin:

  • Much like witch hazel extract, a popular skin care ingredient, green tea also contains tannins. These compounds, in combination with the caffeine found in green tea, help shrink blood vessels.
  • The naturally occurring caffeine content also works to reduce the appearance of puffy eyes and dark circles, much like a DIY coffee eye cream or black tea eye cream. In addition, caffeine can assist in brightening skin so it looks fresh and rejuvenated.
  • Green tea contains a significant amount of polyphenols. As such, it is able to reduce inflammation. Its anti-inflammatory properties not only assist in the reduction of swelling, but they also help with the symptoms of redness and skin irritation. Therefore, it’s also a great remedy for sunburn relief.
  • Because green tea is anti-inflammatory, it is also ideal for those with dermatitis problems as it eases symptoms associated with these conditions. As it soothes itching and irritation, it works great for symptom relief of eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis.
  • Green tea has been proven effective at combating acne. The polyphenols present in this botanical aid in reducing excess sebum secretion. While the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties fight off bacteria that can lead to breakouts.
  • Like many other beneficial plants and herbs, green tea contains vitamin E. Studies show that this vitamin both nourishes and hydrates skin. Thereby giving green tea skin moisturizing properties. So, it’s the perfect complement to a hyaluronic acid serum.
  • The antioxidants present in green tea helps to repair DNA damage to skin cells caused by UV sun exposure. In doing so, your skin may be better protected against skin cancer.
  • Antioxidants found in green tea also help fight aging. While vitamins, like vitamin B-2 in particular, work to maintain healthy collagen levels in skin.

Green Tea Serum Ingredients

These are the ingredients you’ll need to make this green tea serum with hyaluronic acid and aloe:

  • Hyaluronic acid serum base: This serum base is pre-mixed and includes a preservative. Therefore, unlike my DIY hyaluronic acid serum, you won’t have to worry about adding additional ingredients to preserve your product for a longer shelf life. This pre-mixed base for hyaluronic acid has a shelf life of one year and is made with hyaluronic acid, glycerin and aloe. Made in the USA, this base is ready to accept your favorite water based additives like water-soluble green tea extract, rose water, or water-soluble caffeine extract.
  • Green tea extract: This water soluble extract contains a natural preservative. So, it’s easy to add to your skin care formulations. Use it to add antioxidant benefits to your hyaluronic serums. Or incorporate it into recipes for toners, moisturizers and body wash.
  • Aloe vera concentrate: This concentrate is basically aloe vera juice with a natural preservative. It has the the same aloe vera skin care benefits as aloe vera gel. Therefore, it’s great for soothing skin! Use this ingredient to make hyaluronic acid serum at home. Then try the leftover concentrate in your other aloe skin care recipes.

Supplies and Equipment Needed

To make hyaluronic acid serum at home, you will need the following supplies and equipment:

  • Droppers: Droppers, or graduated transfer pipettes are necessary to add the drops of both the green tea extract and aloe vera concentrate to this beauty formulation.
  • Measuring cup: I used a small, 8 oz. glass measuring cup with a spout to mix the hyaluronic acid serum. The spout on the cup makes it easier to pour this DIY beauty serum into individual containers. Alternately, this stainless steel measuring cup with a spout or a heavy duty, Pyrex glass beaker will also work.
  • Small funnel: While optional, a small funnel will make it easier to fill your bottles with this DIY facial serum, mess free!
  • Bottles: I used four of the 1 oz. frosted glass bottles with droppers to package this natural skin care product. These bottles are so pretty and can be reused for other beauty recipes once empty. (Don’t forget to sterilize them first!) However, you can also use amber glass bottles with droppers if you already have these on hand.
  • Labels: It’s important to label the contents of this DIY beauty serum. This way you know what exactly is contained inside the bottles. You can also write the date it was manufactured as well as the expiration date so you don’t risk using an expired DIY skin care product.

How to Make Green Tea Hyaluronic Serum

This green tea serum for your race is quick and easy to make! While the project on Brambleberry indicates this beauty DIY takes 30-minutes to create, I was able to whip up a batch of four 1 oz. bottles in about 5-minutes. If you sanitize your equipment first, however, this does add to the creation time.

Here are instructions on how to make green tea hyaluronic acid serum at home:

  1. It’s recommended, that before you get started, that you sterilize your containers prior to use. To do this, combine distilled water with 5% bleach. Then dip your tools and containers into the solution. Allow them to air dry.
  2. Once you’ve sterilized your equipment, you’re ready to make this DIY green tea hyaluronic serum. To do this, add the hyaluronic acid base to a measuring cup.
  3. Next, use the graduated transfer pipettes to add the drops of both the green tea extract and the aloe vera concentrate to the serum base.
  4. Stir the beauty serum with either a pipette or a utensil to combine.
  5. Now pour the green tea serum you made evenly into each of the four bottles. Then screw on the droppers.
  6. Finally, label your anti-aging serums with the labels provided in the skin care kit. Or create your own!

Tip: I recommend that you also add the date the product was created to the label. This way, you know when the product expires.

How to Use Green Tea Hyaluronic Acid Serum

To use this green tea serum with hyaluronic acid, apply several drops to clean skin. Then follow with your favorite face cream or moisturizer for dry skin. You can use this product on your face and neck as well as your body. This product should be applied prior to applying your moisturizer. It should also be used under makeup.

When to Use Hyaluronic Acid Serum

You can use a hyaluronic acid serum either in the morning, in the evening, or both. However, there are some exceptions.

If you make a facial serum with hyaluronic acid as well as vitamin C, then you shouldn’t use it more than once per day. In addition, if you are using a retinol cream for your face, don’t use a serum containing vitamin C at the same time. Doing so can cause skin irritation, peeling or redness. It will also make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

Therefore if you add vitamin C to this DIY hyaluronic acid serum, make sure that you use it in the morning and the retinol cream in the evening. Or vice versa.

Serum is a blood product, I would never use this unless prescribed by a physician.

This is a beauty serum. Just like those you can buy over the counter to apply to your face for skin care. It has nothing to do with blood. So, I'm rather confused.

Please look up the definition of serum.

This is a FACE serum. Face serums are lightweight products that contain a high concentration of active ingredients. They absorb quickly into your skin, making them an excellent next step after cleansing. There are many different types of serums, each with a unique purpose and ingredients. (I encourage you to look up facial serums so you understand the difference.) My serum is made with a hyaluronic acid base containing Water, Aloe Vera, Vitamin B-5, Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin, Optiphen (a preservative.) It's similar to other facial serums you can buy in the store.
