Primers are a must-have makeup item; the formula keeps your face flawless and smooth and preps your skin’s surface before applying foundation.

While there are so many primer brands to choose from, you can make your own makeup primer without the added chemicals.

Also, my special DIY makeup primer is so inexpensive to make, your bank account will be grateful for those extra dollars saved! Let’s jump right into it.

Tools and materials:

  • Empty spray bottle
  • Rosewater
  • Glycerin
  • Distilled or filtered water
  • Aloe vera (optional)

Face primer recipe

Visually divide your spray bottle into 5 equal parts. You can also use a marker in case you need more accuracy.

Then, fill up two portions of the bottle with water. Make sure it’s either distilled or filtered water.

Rosewater primer DIY

Now, grab your favorite rosewater product and fill the spray bottle with another two portions with it. Rosewater is really purifying and adds a lovely glow to the face, too.

Tip: Try to find the most authentic, purest rosewater for this rosewater primer DIY project.

Lastly, pour half a portion of glycerin into the mix.

Why is glycerin good? It has extremely high moisturizing properties and works wonders on your skin. Also, it has a sticky/tacky feel that will help your makeup stay on your skin for a lot longer.

Tip: If you have a dry skin type, then go ahead and fill one whole portion of glycerin.

How to make a primer for makeup

If you live in a very hot climate or it’s summer, then go ahead and add about half a portion of aloe vera gel to the mix.

Aloe vera is extremely invigorating and adds a cooling effect that’s perfect for hot and humid climates.

Testing out the homemade primer

Shake the bottle really well before every use. Here, I have sprayed the homemade primer onto my arm just to test it out.

Then, go over it with a foundation and blend it in with your fingers.

Here are the results. Can't see anything? Great! That means the primer has done its job at creating a perfect base for the foundation to sit on. My makeup blends seamlessly into my skin.
