How to Make a Dress Out of Pajama Pants - No Sewing Machine Required
In this tutorial, I'll show you how to make a dress out of pajama pants. Prepare to be amazed by this DIY transformation! We’re going to turn a standard pair of pajama pants into a cute off-the-shoulder top and matching skirt, which can be worn together to look like a dress.
This is a super easy project that you can do at home, follow along with this step-by-step tutorial.
Tools and materials:
- Cotton pajamas
- Safety pins
- Scissors
- Fabric glue
- Elastic
- Needle and thread
1. Measure the length of the skirt
The first thing you’re going to do is measure the length you want your skirt to be. Put the pajamas on, and using safety pins, mark where you want the skirt to fall to.
2. Measure the length for the top
Next, you’re going to measure the length for the top. From where you pinned the pants, hold them up against your chest and mark where you want the top to come to with another safety pin.
The remaining fabric on the bottom will be the sleeves.
3. Cut the pieces out
After you’ve marked all of the lengths of the different pieces with safety pins, proceed to cut them out.
4. Make the skirt
To make the skirt, I removed the drawstring on my shorts because I really don’t like them; if however, you do like them, you can keep them, and they can be part of the look.
To transform the pants into a skirt, start by removing the stitches from the middle section and sew the edges together. When done, the skirt will have uneven edges at the bottom, so just trim them to make them even.
You will have a raw edge on the bottom part of the skirt, so for this, all you need to do is apply some glue to the bottom and then fold your fabric up to cover it to give it a clean finish.
5. Make the top
Next, we are going to work on the top. For this, all you have to do is remove the stitches from both pieces and just join them together using fabric glue.
You then need to insert your elastic inside your tube top, and for this, all you need to do is fold some of the fabric over to make a loop where you can place the elastic inside.
Remember to leave a little opening where you will insert the elastic. Insert the elastic in by attaching a safety pin to one end and pulling it through. Once done, close up the hole with some glue.
6. Make the sleeves
We want the sleeves to be elasticated on one side, so for this, you also want to create a loop in which you can pull the elastic and safety pin through, as you did with the top. Once done, glue up the open hole.
7. Attach the sleeves to the top
The final step is to attach the sleeves to the top.
How to make a dress out of pajama pants
Here is the finished look! It is a two-piece skirt and top outfit, but it looks just like an off-the-shoulder dress. This cute outfit is such an improvement on those pajama pants that we started with!
This is such a great upcycling DIY, so if you have a pair of pajama pants sitting around that you no longer wear, now you know what you can do with them!

I love it.
Very cute!
My old jammy pants would never be nice enough to use them for anything but a rag. Lol
