My friend gave me this Old Navy dress to upcycle a year ago, and I hadn’t done anything with it.

But when I found an amazing vintage pillowcase in the thrift store, I knew exactly how I was going to use it!

Tools and materials:

  • Spaghetti strap dress
  • Wide lace panels
  • Ribbon or cord
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
Resizing dress

1. Resize the dress

The dress was big on me and had a shirred back.

The first thing I did was remove the back zipper and take in the center back seam.

I also shortened the dress.

Lace panels

2. Lace panels

The large vintage pillowcase was a beautiful find and the broderie anglaise ruffles were exactly what I needed.

Lace panels

I cut two panels, to fit on the bodice of the dress with a space between them.

I pinned and sewed them to the outside edges of the bodice, with the right sides facing.

Lacing

3. Lacing

I flipped the panels towards the center of the bodice and attached ribbon through the lace holes so it looked as if the panels were laced together.

Lacing

I turned down the neckline of the dress and top stitched it.

Upcycling an Old Navy dress to look more vintage

Most people upcycle something old to make it look more up to date. I prefer the vintage look and I love my take on a laced bodice.

I really think it’s made the dress into something special. Do you like it?
