The World's Easiest 1 Seam Dress to Make
I came across this fabric while I was shopping. It claimed to make a one seam dress, so I wanted to try it. Sew along with me and see what happened.
Tools and materials:
- Smocked dress fabric
- Pins
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Fabric marker
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Pinking shears (optional)
1. Wrap and pin
I bought two yards originally, but that was far too much so I cut it down to one yard.
I wrapped it around myself and pinned it in place to see how much I would need. I marked the top at the point where I wanted to trim it.
2. Cut to size
I used a ruler and fabric marker to draw a straight line from my mark down the fabric.
Then I cut along my line.
I also marked and cut about 5 inches from the hem edge.
3. Sew the single seam
I repinned and sewed the side seam, taking a half inch seam allowance.
The fabric frays easily, so I used pinking shears to trim it.
You could also overlock or zigzag stitch the raw edges.
4. Sew the hem
There is really a second seam because you have to hem the dress!
I turned up and pressed a narrow double hem and sewed it in place.
The world's easiest 1 seam dress to make
The dress was really easy to make! Technically it has one seam, if you don’t count the hem.
It looks pretty good though. What do you think?

We made those as kids in the early 70's.
