How to Sew a Zipper Pouch for Beginners
This is a perfect project for beginners. You learn to work with a zipper and a lining. The finished pouch can be used, gifted or sold.
So let’s get going.
Tools and materials:
- Outer and lining fabric
- Fusible interfacing
- 8 inch zipper
- Scissors
- Pins
- Iron
- Sewing machine with zipper foot
1. Prepare fabric
Cut two pieces of fabric and two pieces of lining, each 10 inches by 8 inches.
You need two pieces of interfacing of the same size and two small scraps of fabric each 2 inches square.
2. Add interfacing
Iron the glue side of the interfacing to the wrong side of the lining pieces.
3. Prepare loops
Fold your scraps in half and press.
Open them up and press the two edges into the center. Fold in half again.
Place the ends of the zipper tape into the pieces and sew them down.
4. Assemble pouch
Place the zipper on one of the outer pieces with the right sides together and sew along the top edge close to the teeth.
Put the second fabric piece on top with the right sides facing and sew the free edge of the zipper to it.
Place one lining piece right side down on the wrong side of the zipper and sew.
Repeat with the second piece of lining.
Press everything well.
Top stitch along the right side of the zipper.
Open the zipper.
Pin the two outer pieces together with the right sides facing, and do the same with the lining.
Sew around the edges, leaving a small opening in the lining.
5. Finishing
Snip the corners.
Turn the pouch right side out through the hole in the lining.
Sew the opening closed.
Tuck the lining inside the pouch.
You can add a tassel to the zipper pull and an applique initial for a personal touch.
