This grapefruit whipped sugar scrub is a fun and fluffy take on a traditional sugar scrub.

The recipe is so simple, but the final product is light and fluffy – almost like a combination of body scrub and body butter.

What is a Whipped Sugar Scrub?A whipped sugar scrub is very similar to a traditional body scrub, but it uses a solid oil or butter that has been whipped as the base. Sugar is mixed in, and it’s like a magical body scrub/body butter combo that somehow feels more luxurious than a traditional scrub.

Sounds fantastic, right?! It’s such a treat for your skin and makes a beautiful handmade gift as well! This recipe is so easy to customize you can create your favorite scent in no time.

How do you Whip Sugar Scrub?

The key to making a successfully whipped sugar scrub is the type and texture of the oil that you use. This recipe uses coconut oil as the base. You’ll want to make sure your coconut oil is at room temperature for this recipe to turn out correctly.

If you live in a warmer climate and your coconut oil is melted, place it in the fridge for about 30 minutes to firm up. Alternately, you may need to whip it longer to get that fluffy feel if it’s too cold.

The ideal texture for your coconut oil is solid but soft and not melted.

To make your sugar scrub whipped, you use a hand or standing mixer and give the coconut oil and sugar a good blend. Be patient – it will take a few minutes to get fluffy!

Next, you add your favorite essential oils (grapefruit for this recipe), mix again, and you’re done!

Making a whipped scrub only takes a few minutes longer than a traditional sugar or salt scrub, and the final product is so fun to use!

Whipped Sugar Scrub Ingredients

This simple recipe uses just three ingredients. You’ll need:

  • Room temperature coconut oil
  • Granulated sugar
  • Grapefruit essential oil

You can use any essential oil you like instead of grapefruit or leave it out entirely for a naturally scented sugar scrub. Grapefruit essential oil is refreshing and uplifting, and I love this scrub as a morning pick-me-up or as an act of self-care when you’re feeling down.

Is Whipped Sugar Scrub Good for Your Skin?

Just like any homemade body scrub, a whipped sugar scrub provides essential exfoliating and moisturizing properties that are GREAT for your skin!

Exfoliating sluffs away the top layer of dead skin and keeps it healthy, soft, and glowing.

This whipped scrub is packed with nourishing coconut oil, which leaves skin hydrated and soft.

This recipe is meant to be used as a body scrub, and I recommend it everywhere, EXCEPT your face. I do not love coconut oil for facial skin since it is comedogenic (can clog pores), but this is great as an all-over body scrub.

How to Store Whipped Sugar Scrub

This whipped scrub should be stored at room temperature in an air-tight jar. The consistency may change if stored for an extended period since coconut oil will melt or harden with the changing temperature. To avoid this, I recommend keeping it in a place with a consistent temperature (under the bathroom sink works well for me!).

I do not recommend storing this in the shower, as it may melt from the warmth of the shower. In addition, it is essential to make sure no water gets into the scrub, as that will allow bacteria to grow in your scrub. Make sure to keep water out of the jar to prevent this!

I love to use a cute glass jar if I plan to make them as gifts. Of course, you can also re-use an empty container or use a mason jar as an inexpensive storage option!

How long does Whipped Sugar Scrub Last?

You can safely store your homemade whipped scrub for at least three months, as long as you’ve been careful to avoid any water contamination in the jar. I find it loses some of its whipped feels after a while, so I prefer to make smaller batches more frequently.
