How To Create A Cinched Waist In Fall Layers

With all the layering we do for fall and winter wear, it’s easy to sometimes feel like we look a little “stuffed.” Sweaters on top of shirts, and thicker materials can cover our sleek hourglass silhouette. But not with a little cinching.

Tailored cinched waist blazers and oversized belts were all the rage on the runways this year. So, if you don’t want to look like you’ve filled up on too many pumpkin spice goodies, here’s how to create a cinched waist in fall layers.

Belt a Sweater

Cardigan sweaters are your best friend when the weather starts to cool down. They’re light and can be worn over almost any outfit. One way to keep them from looking frumpy and rumpled is to add a belt. This will bring in your waist and keep your shape. Try buttoning the cardigan just in the middle for some added cinch effect. Also, look for cardigans with a longer, straight fit rather than those with a more puffy, cropped fit.  Shop cardigans.

Add a Corset Belt

Bring in the waistline of any outfit by adding a corset belt. These thicker belts are usually made with stretchy elastic band and large buckle or tie to draw attention to the waist and bring it in for the ultimate hourglass effect. Turn a simple dress into a statement outfit.  Shop corset belt.

Use the Cincher Tool

If you have an item of clothing that doesn’t have any shape, you can give it a little help with the handy Cinch It tool. This little magic wand gives you a sneaky way to cinch in garments from shirts to dresses, creating a tasteful gather effect while showing people you still have a waistline. I used it to cinch in this straight-line maxi dress that felt like a big sack without any shape. It formed a nice “flower” effect at the waist and added interest to the dress. See also  my article on how to use this to cinch in oversized T-shirts.  Shop the Cinch It.
