3 Ways to Cinch A Big T-Shirt

I love wearing t-shirts in the summer. They’re comfy, soft, cool and you can wear designs that reflect your personality and taste.

However, many t-shirts come in a boxy shape. I try to buy women’s t-shirts that tend to be more fitted, but even then, the sizing can be tricky, and they might look large and loose.

Wearing a big t-shirt can sometimes look a little sloppy, like I just rolled out of bed. So to give it some shape and style, I like to cinch it.

There are a couple of great tools on the market that can do just that.

Here are 3 ways to cinch a big t-shirt:

The Knot

You can always tie excess material into a knot and cinch the shirt around your midriff. This is my least favorite. You have to stretch a “tail” of the material to create the knot, which can result in misshaping your t-shirt. It also makes deep wrinkles if you decide to wear it loose later. And I don’t really like anything exposing my belly, and to do this style, you pretty much have to tie it tight around your midriff, which exposes your belly. More power to you if you have killer abs you want to show off! However, this option works in a pinch if you don’t have any cinching tools on hand.

The Slide

A slide buckle is a great way to cinch a t-shirt. You simply “slide” a section of the shirt through and tighten it however much you want, like a belt. You can wear the slide to the side, in the center or back. I love this little slide because it’s shaped like a flower, but you can go to a simple round or square shape. You can also use them as a scarf ring. See my previous article on how to wear it that way.  Shop T-Shirt Slide.

The Cinch It

This tool is made specifically to cinch too-big clothing, from shirts to dresses. Also shaped like a flower with a center hole, the Cinch It is meant to be hidden underneath the clothing. You simply pull some excess material through it, and the stickiness of the rubber material will hold it in place. This can also be worn front, back or side. I prefer it in the back because it gives a smooth, tailored appearance in the front and an interesting starburst-like gather in the back. It’s also great if you’re wearing a graphic t-shirt and want to show off the design more clearly without cinching over it.  Shop the Cinch It
