Make this Ghostbusters DIY costume with homemade proton pack for Halloween. Ghostbusters is a classic film and I love the original as well as the new all female remake. With some simple supplies and a tan jumpsuit you can make an authentic looking Ghostbusters costume on the cheap. Dressing up as the gang from Ghostbusters is a great group costume for your and your friends to try this year. Check out the full tutorial to make your own.

Supplies for diy Ghostbusters costume:

Ghostbusters Jumpsuit:

  • Khaki colored coveralls
  • Combat boots
  • Gloves
  • Goggles

DIY Ghostbusters Proton Pack:

  • Shallow plastic bin
  • Assortment of recyclable boxes and tins
  • Black spray paint
  • Bicycle reflectors
  • Old cords and wires
  • Black Electrical tape
  • Battery operated Christmas lights
  • Old backpack straps
  • Vacuum hose
  • Handle from an old vacuum

The jumpsuit can be purchased from a hardware store or garden supply store or you can purchase the one above from Amazon. Boots, gloves and goggles are available at Walmart. The goggles I used are night vision goggles. Why did we have a pair of night vision goggles lying around? I have no idea, but they worked perfectly for this costume.

To make the proton pack begin by taking your plastic bin and flipping it over. Then, glue on old boxes, lids or plastic pieces. I used regular superglue but a hot glue gun will also work. Once the glue is completely dry, spray the entire thing with black spray paint. Spray two coats and then let it sit overnight to dry.

The next day you can add you embellishments. Add bicycle reflectors, plastic lids to look like buttons, old wires and cables and battery operated Christmas lights. I also added a doorbell and some small metal bits and pieces I found at the bottom of the junk drawer (there are benefits of never throwing anything away!) I used black electrical tape to help reinforce some of the heavier objects like the tape recorder I attached to the side and the wires.

I cut off the straps of an old backpack and used duct tape to secure them to the inside of the plastic bin, then I taped the vacuum hose and handle from the mop all together to look like the gun.

When you are ready, suit up, flip the switch on your battery operated lights and head out to go catch some ghosts!

Depending on which version of the Ghostbusters costume you want to make you can add a few other accessories. In the new remake, the Ghostbuster women had orange reflective tape on their jumpsuits. Both versions of the costume had the Ghostbusters logo patch on the arm. I didn’t have time to order one but they do sell them on Amazon if you want to pick one of those up too.

Thank you. Those were my ideas, but the photo shop looks great.
