Grab some Walmart hoops and yarn. I am going to show you how to customize an adorable pair of earrings.

This is a fun and easy way to make your own one-of-a-kind jewelry, even on a budget.

Tools and materials:

  • Hoop earrings
  • Colored yarn
  • Comb
  • Scissors
Gathering materials

1. Gathering materials

You can purchase a pair of cheap hoops at Walmart, like I did, or you can use a pair of old hoops.

You’ll also need some embroidery thread in a color you love.

2. Cut and loop

Cut a few pieces of thread to the size you like. Take a piece of thread and fold it in half.

Now bring the center of the thread under the earring and let it open like a little loop.

Pull the ends of the thread up and over the earring and then pull it through the loop of the center of the thread.

This will secure the string around the earring.

Repeat this step over and over again with as many pieces of thread as you like.

Combing yarn

3. Comb and trim

To make sure your design looks nice and neat, use a comb to brush through the thread to make sure everything is untangled.

Trimming yarn

Then use a pair of scissors to cut the ends evenly in a straight line.

This is a great idea. Sometimes it's hard to find the right colors on game day when you want to support your team so this is a great way to bring in your colors.

The only thing I would suggest is a different cut at the bottom. It could just be the photograph, but it's like cuttting your hair. It looks shorter on one side than the other. Maybe cut the bottom in a "smile shape" (an arc which is long in the center.) But super affordable idea. Also, maybe experiment with embroidery thread which would be thinner. Or the way doll makers use yarn for hair - use a cat brush and thoroughly brush until it no longer looks like twisted yarn, but looks literally like soft hair.

With the idea of game colors - at Joann's Fabrics, they sell yarn in team colors. You could make up a slew of these and Etsy them advertising for the team they represent.
