Do you have the type of hair that takes about an hour to straighten and only 10 minutes to turn into a massive puffball? Me too! In this tutorial, I'm going to be showing you how to keep hair smooth in humid weather, and how to have it last for multiple days, including overnight.

I should start off by saying that products are integral when it comes to taming your hair. I know that most people are very wary when your hairdresser starts to sell you a product because you think they're trying to do it to make a sale, but I can tell you with full certainty - being a hairdresser myself - that this isn't the case.

We're trying to sell products so that you get the salon result at home. Quality products made for your hair goal make all the difference in the look and longevity of the end result.

Tools and materials:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Leave-in conditioner
  • Smoothing lotion
  • Hairbrush
  • Hot air brush
  • Flat iron
  • De-frizz oil
  • Silk pillowcase
How to stop hair going frizzy outside

1. Prep your hair

First, wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner that specializes in taming frizz. Most haircare lines have a version of this, so you can choose the frizz-focused version of your regular shampoo, or something different if you prefer.

After you've finished washing your hair, you're going to want to prep it. Because I have very frizzy hair that lacks a lot of moisture, I always like to put a little bit of moisture into my hair, regardless of the style I'm doing.

I'm going to add some leave-in conditioner and make sure that I spray it everywhere. Then, I'm going to cocktail my hair with some smoothing lotion. Doing this is really going to reduce frizz and leave your hair smoother for much longer.

2. Brush

After you've put the products in, you're going to run your brush through your hair because you're going to want to evenly distribute the product from roots to end.

3. Blow dry

Next is the most important step. There's no amount of product that you can use that will skip over this step, and that's the blow-dry.

My top tip to you is to invest in a hot brush. A hot brush is essentially a round brush with a blow dryer inside, so you don't have to hold the round brush and the blow dryer separately.

You want to position the blow dryer so that the air flows down. The most important thing when achieving smooth hair is smoothing that cuticle layer down. You can do this with your hot tool by directing the airflow down. However, you have to always do it when your hair is wet.

The cuticle is the outermost part of the hair shaft and it kind of looks like shingles on a roof. When the cuticle is open, or it's all mixed up, your hair looks super frizzy and rough. When all of those shingles lay flat and tight, your hair looks smooth and shiny.

4. Flat iron

After you've finished blowing it out, your hair will be silky and smooth and look incredible, but you're going to want to add one more step for the longevity of wear, and that is flat ironing your hair. This will seal it all in.

When you're smoothing out your hair after your blow dry, you want to go section by section. It is so important that you get every single hair in those passes. You want to do one to two passes maximum, so that you don't create a lot of damage.

5. Finish off

Finish off your hair and seal it off with smoothing and anti-humidity finishing products. You want to find a light oil that won't weigh your hair down. This will put a seal on your hair so that it can't puff up.

6. Night-time

When you go to sleep, what are you going to do to keep your hair silky and smooth for the next day? My next very important step is to use a silk pillowcase.

A silk pillowcase is life-changing for your hair! It is a smooth, soft, satiny place for your hair to lay on, so when you're rolling and moving, your hair isn't bundling and snagging and breaking; it's just moving fluidly with the pillow because of the fabric of it.

If you follow these steps and do all of these things, I guarantee you three, four, maybe even five days with your frizz-free beautiful hair, even in the summer months when the weather is against you.

I've been having a bad hair life and I can't wait to try this method of taming my hair. When I was a teen, I tried so hard to put the latest hairstyles into my uncooperative hair. Eventually, I gave up and just resigned myself to refusing to look in the mirror at the frizzy mess that is my hair. I don't necessarily want straight hair, but tamed hair would be such a blessing!
