Lip Balm Ingredients

Jojoba oil: I love the noncomedogenic properties of jojoba oil which make it a great choice for every skin type (even sensitive skin!). It is also notoriously silky smooth! Having said that, you can replace this with nearly any other oil you prefer. Sweet almond oil and hemp oil also make excellent choices.

Raw honey: This adds and retains moisture, is a natural antibacterial, adds a subtle delicious flavor and really helps create a thick and silky lip balm.

Beeswax: Either white or yellow beeswax can be used. Beeswax creates much of the texture of this recipe as well as greatly quenches dry lips.

Coconut oil: The coconut oil in this recipe actually adds the silky sheen that is almost lip gloss like. If you do not want to use it or do not have any hand, it can be omitted for a still-really-wonderful lip balm. You can also replace it with olive oil or avocado oil if you still want a sheen!

Beet powder: Beet powder aka beetroot powder adds the color to this recipe making it a tinted lip balm. Once you get this recipe down, you can experiment by using other dehydrated fruit and vegetable powders to create your own favorites tints.

Vitamin E oil: Vitamin e oil acts as a natural preservative while also adding additional moisture and healing benefits. You can omit, just keep in mind the lip balm may spoil sooner.

Peppermint essential oil: A few drops of peppermint oil adds that fresh lip balm flavor and scent, however it can be omitted or replaced with a favorite essential oil of your choosing if you prefer. Sweet orange oil, lavender oil, lemon oil also make great choices as does a few drops of vanilla extract.

Top Tip

Make this DIY recipe your own by experimenting with your own natural colorants. Once you give beet powder a try, also consider using spices like nutmeg or superfood powders like dragon fruit powder, maqui berry powder, strawberry powder or acai berry powder. Experimenting can be a great way to find that "perfect color"!
