Is there anything as recognizable as classic red lips? Follow this tutorial to learn how to create perfect red lips and make your lipstick last.

These are tips and tricks for long-lasting red lipstick that I’ve picked up over the years and am now sharing with you.

Tools and materials:

  • Lip liner
  • Lipstick
  • Makeup brushes
  • Cotton makeup pad
Applying concealer to lips

1. Start with concealer

Apply a bit of concealer to your fingertip and rub it onto your lips.

Essentially, you are concealing your lip line before you do anything else.

Blending concealer

Use a makeup brush to blend the concealer.

Setting concealer

2. Set your concealer

Set the concealer by brushing some makeup setting powder over your lips.

Applying lip liner

3. Apply lip liner

Always make sure you start with a sharpened lip liner if you are using a lip liner pencil.

Tip: If you have accidentally over-sharpened your lip liner, you can dull the point a bit by just rubbing some off onto your hand.

Otherwise, the sharp point may break off on your lips.

Lining lips

Look closely at the edge of your lip and you will see that directly above it is a lightly shaded area that I call the shelf.

Trace around the shelf of your lip with the lip liner.

Filling lips in

4. Fill in your lips

Use the same lip liner to fill in your lips, making sure not to go over your outlines.

Applying lipstick

5. Apply your lipstick

Now you are ready to add your lipstick over your filled-in lips.

Powdering lips

6. Powder your lips

With a cotton makeup pad and your setting powder, lightly dust your lips directly on top of your lipstick.

Tip: Dusting your lips with powder is also a good trick if you have glossy lipstick that you would prefer to be matte.

Reapplying lip liner

7. Reapply lip liner

Apply lip liner to the outline of your lips again, to redefine the edges.

Second coat

8. Finish with a second coat

Then, add just a bit more liner to the body of your lips, followed by a second coat of lipstick.

Cleaning up teeth

9. Clean up your teeth

Red lipstick does like to gravitate to your teeth, so wrap a tissue around your finger and just wipe it over the interior of your lips to keep it from transferring to your teeth.

How to make lipstick last

Because you have layered on your lip coloring, even if you are drinking and some lipstick comes off on your glass, that first layer will remain in place on your lips for a very long time.
