Have some old or broken makeup lying around? Instead of trashing them, you can upcycle them and make a lovely DIY lipstick! In this tutorial, we will show you how to melt lipstick to create new lipsticks and different shades.
This is an amazing DIY for yourself or even a great gift idea for birthdays or as stocking stuffers for the holidays!
Tools and materials:
- Old lipsticks
- Mixing bowl - microwave friendly
- Microwave
- Small containers
- Spoon
- Box or Christmas greeting card
- Glue
1. Choose your lipsticks
Choose what lipsticks you want to melt. We suggest using a few from the same shade. Here, we chose three lipsticks with a pink/purple shade. You don’t need to use three shades; you can use two or even one.
2. Melt the lipsticks
Here’s the cool part, let’s show you how to melt and mix the lipstick! First, cut your lipstick and place it into a microwaveable bowl.
Now, head on over to your microwave and let it run for 15-30 seconds. Everyone’s microwave is different so it may take longer. This is what it should look like.
Then, mix the melted lipstick to get that pretty awesome shade!
3. Pour into a container
We got these cute lipstick containers off Amazon. Simply transfer the mixture to the container using a spoon.
Now, let it dry and harden up overnight.
Here’s how the DIY lipstick looks once it’s dried!
Gift ideas
So, let’s talk about gift ideas! As mentioned, this DIY make-your-own lipstick project is a fantastic gift idea for the holidays! You can make it a stocking stuffer or add it to a gift.
You can glue it to a Christmas greeting card, as shown. Then, attach the card to your gift. This definitely gives an extra touch!

While it is a cute idea for yourself , gifting someone a mix of lipsticks that your mouth has been all over is really gross. Never share makeup or brushes and it is recommended to toss your lipstick max after two years . It can cause irritation and inflammation and maybe cold sores - ewww.
Agreed. But it's a great idea if you want a color change for yourself. Marshall's usually has various lipsticks that you can buy in a quad or more. Would be a good regift then.
