How to Sew a Silk Pillowcase & How to Take Care of 3b Hair Curls

In this tutorial, I will show you how to sew a silk pillowcase and how to care for your curly hair. Those of you that have curly hair will know that sometimes it can have a mind of its own. Here, you’ll learn a haircare routine that will leave you with bouncing, perfectly defined curls.
First, I’m going to show you how to make a satin pillowcase. A satin pillowcase feels really nice on the skin, and it also is going to reduce friction, which therefore means less frizz for your curls.
Tools and materials:
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- Serger
- Silk charmeuse fabric
- Cotton satin backing
- Pillow
- Shampoo
- Microfiber towel
- Conditioner
- Brush
- Curl cream
- Blow dryer with diffuser
- Curly hair elastics
How to sew a silk pillowcase for your curly hair
1. Measure and cut the fabric
To create the pillowcase, you’re going to need two rectangles. First, find out the dimensions of your pillow, mine is a queen size one, so it’s 20x30inches (51x76cm).
Next, cut out two rectangles: one from your silk charmeuse fabric and the other from the cotton sating backing. You want to add an extra ½-inch seam allowance all around, so I’m cutting out two 21x31 inch rectangles.
With the silk charmeuse, ensure that the length is parallel to the selvage edge so that the smooth grain works in your favor as you sleep. Otherwise, it’s not going to be as effective.
2. Serge the edges
The next stage is to serge the edges. You want to leave one of the width sides open so that you can insert the pillow, but serge both of these sides separately.
3. Make a straight stitch
Next, make a straight stitch all the way around the perimeter.
4. Fold and sew
Finally, fold back the top edge a quarter of an inch and then fold it a quarter of an inch again and sew that down.
That’s the super-quick pillowcase that you can whip up really easily, and it will make your hair happy.
Simply put your pillow inside, and sweet dreams!
How to take care of 3b hair
Now let’s move on to my curly hair tutorial for keeping those curls frizz-free.
1. Shampoo
Start by shampooing your locks.
2. Dry
Towel-dry your hair using a microfiber towel because it’s more gentle on your hair.
3. Conditioner
Then put on some conditioner. I’m just using a little bit because I’m not going to wash it out. I try to brush my hair forwards because I learned that this allows my hair to gain a little bit more volume.
4. Curl cream
Next, take some curl cream and put some on the top of your hair. I feel like you can’t put on too much.
To get that curl cream into your hair, scrunch your hair up and then finger curl. I used to finger curl every layer but I learned that this just gives me these sausage-looking curls and leaves me with no volume.
So, I had to change my tune and what I do now is just the top layer, turning it towards the natural pattern of my original curl and you’ll figure that out if you’re just starting.
This helps a ton with definition. Once you’re done curling your hair, flip it upside down again to give it more volume.
5. Diffuse
The next step is to diffuse. Make sure that it’s cool air. When done diffusing, fluff and shape your hair a bit, and you’ll have luscious locks.
6. Tie hair up
Before you go to sleep, what I’ve found to be really helpful is to use curly elastics. These elastics keep your hair from getting a kink in them. Tie your hair up onto the top of your head but be gentle because you don’t want to mess up your curls.
7. Sleep with the silk pillowcase
Finally, go to bed with your silk pillowcase, which will be soft and gentle on your curls as you sleep.
