In this DIY, I’m going to show you how to turn a t-shirt into t-shirt yarn. I will then be crocheting it to turn it into a unique accessory.

I can’t wait to show you the finished result. Let’s get started with this upcycle!

Tools and materials:

  • T-shirt
  • Scissors
  • Crochet hook
T-shirt to upcycle

Cutting strips

1. Cut top into strips

Cut the t-shirt into 1-inch (2.5cm) strips and stop 1-inch before you get to the edge.

To cut the strips, you can use scissors or a rotary blade on top of a cutting board if you find that easier.

Stretching fabric

2. Stretch fabric

Stretch the fabric out.

Rolling into yarn

3. Roll into yarn

Then roll it into a ball of yarn.

Crocheting

4. Crochet with the yarn

Now crochet with the yarn. I used an 11.5mm hook.

It might feel strange at first because the t-shirt yarn is much thicker and wider than regular yarn, but you’ll get used to it.

Crocheting

I crocheted a bunch of chains, and I used large stitches to create gaps.

Progress shot

This is what I created, and there are so many ways to style it.

I can wear it over a top.

Or on top of a dress.

For the remainder of the t-shirt yarn, I just made a long chain and tried to style it.

This was such a fun DIY. With most upcycling products I’ve done, I’ve modified a piece of clothing to turn it into something different.

Here we completely deconstructed the whole t-shirt, turning it into yarn and then crocheting that yarn to create a super cool accessory.

Interesting. I'd do something else with the yarn but I like the idea of how to make the yarn.
