This is going to be your ultimate guide to waving your shorter hair. If you've always struggled with a clamp curling iron and you can't seem to get flatter and curls to work either.

You might have just about given up on being able to achieve this style yourself from home.

I'm going to teach you not only how to wave a bob with a flat iron but how to master it today.

Tools and materials:

  • Mousse
  • Hairspray
  • Heat protectant spray
  • Comb
  • Hot air brush
  • Curling wand
  • Flat iron
  • Texture powder

When it comes to doing a style like this, the hair needs to be smooth to begin with.

You don’t want to smooth it using a flattening iron; otherwise, when you curl it on top of that base, the curl won't hold for the whole day.

It will also take away much of the hair's volume, so when you curl on top of it, it's much harder to get a fuller, fluffier look.

1. Apply volumizing products

Because my hair is quite flat in the wet stage, I always use volume products. If your hair tends to be frizzy, you should look for smoothing products instead of volume products.

I use a volumizing mousse on the mid shafts and ends and then a volumizing spray on my roots.

Then spray everything with a heat protectant and comb through from roots to ends to evenly distribute it.

2. Blow out hair

Next, blow your hair out with a hot air brush. Go section by section, making sure to smooth that cuticle layer down completely before moving on to the next section.

Make sure to twist the brush as you go. You will know it’s time to move on to the next section when your hair looks smooth and glossy.

3. Blow out top section

Blow dry the top section of hair backward and forward. I find that this gives me more flexibility than if I do a part in my hair.

It also allows you to part your hair wherever you like at a later stage.

4. Wave hair

Anything from the top of the ear down is going to be gently waved with the straightener.

We're not going to curl this section because we need the base of the hair to be straighter in order to support the waves on top without shrinking too much in length.

Starting at the first section, clamp your iron down and rock up and down and up and down as you move down the hair shaft.

5. Curl hair

Once you get around the temples, grab your curling wand (I’m using a 1-inch curling wand).

The finer your hair, the less heat you need. You also want it hot enough that it will bend the hair but not so hot that it will make it too curly.

You want to twist your hair as you wrap it around the iron and leave the ends out.

Hold it in place for a few seconds, move the barrel away and pull on the hair to soften that shape while it’s still hot.

This technique creates a wave and not a ringlet.

Curling hair

Curl the hair beside your face away from the face.

Then, to give your hair a tousled look, curl different sections in alternate directions so that some of the waves go toward the face and some go away from the face.

Repeat all the way around your head.

Applying products

6. Apply volumizing products

Add some volume to the top of your hair by sprinkling in some texture powder.

Also add some texturizing hairspray - make sure to lift your hair up and get it into the under layers.

Here is the end result. It is soft and fluffy but still textured.

I have just enough waves for this length without it looking too curly or springing up too much, but also without the waves dropping out completely.
