Easy Hair Tutorial: How to Make a Flat Braid
Do you want to know how to make a flat braid?
Today, I’m going to share with you a technique that can be used for any size flat braid - three-strand, four, five, six - whatever you want!
I’m going to demonstrate by using strings. Let's jump right into the tutorial!
Tools and materials:
- Hair tie
- Strings (optional)
1. Bring first piece to the other side
I made one piece of string a different color so you can see how it moves through the braid.
Start off by grabbing the piece furthest on the left, and weave it over to the right by going over, under, and then over the other pieces until you get to the other side.
Look: over the second piece.
Then, under the third piece.
And then over the fourth piece. Pull to tighten when you reach the end.
2. Repeat
Lay the four strands out neatly, separating one from the other, and repeat the process by grabbing the next piece from the same side and weaving it over to the right by going over, under, and then over the other pieces.
Pull each strand to tighten.
3. Continue
Now you know the process, continue until your braid is done. And, of course, this works for any number of strands in your braid.
Here are the different braids you can create depending on how many pieces of string you use.
As you can see, the pink string slides downwards in a snake formation.
Braiding with hair
1. Separate hair
Hair is a little bit more complicated because we're working in sections, not pieces.
Section your hair (I’m doing a four-strand braid again), and make sure you're holding all your sections separate and up high, close to the braid.
2. Braid
The process is the same - grab a section from one side and weave it over, under, and then over to the other side.
If you're doing a larger braid, like five or six strands, you might want a clip section to your shirt to hold it or just put it in your mouth.
3. Continue
Make sure you're holding the hair very close to the braid to keep it tight, and make sure each section stays separate.
Continue braiding your hair, repeating the same process.
How to braid: Flat braid tutorial
Here are the different types of flat braids you can create, depending on how many strands of hair you use.
This technique takes a little practice, but it will get easier and easier the more you braid. It really is quite straightforward, and as with anything, practice makes perfect.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and you’ll give the technique a go for yourself!
