How to Make a Flower Out of Polymer Clay - Part 1: Wild Rose
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to make a flower out of polymer clay. You can use these flowers in jewelry-making, creating earrings, a necklace pendant, a brooch, or any other accessory you like.
This delicate wild rose is just one of my polymer clay flower styles you can do and looks really beautiful if you mix different colors too. Let's get started.
Tools and materials:
- Polymer modeling clay
- Sharp-edged tool
Polymer clay is a bit of a misnomer because it typically does not contain any clay at all.
This kind of modeling clay is made from polymer polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to which a liquid is added to achieve that gel-like consistency. It’s precisely that consistency, and the fact that it won’t harden until it is cured, that makes it so popular for craft-making.
1. Make the center of the polymer clay flower
Roll a pea-sized ball of polymer clay under your fingertip until it is smooth and perfectly round.
Continue rolling the ball on one end to get a conical teardrop shape.
Using the same color polymer clay, roll 2 more small balls and, then with your fingertips, flatten each one into a circular disc, making it as thin as you can.
Wrap these two petals around the teardrop. Wrap one first and then wrap the other, overlapping the edges of the first petal.
The teardrop and these two petals make up the center of the flower.
2. Make polymer clay flower petals
Using a different color of polymer clay from the flower center, make 5 more petals, just as you did in Step 1, but make them a bit larger than the petals in the center of the flower.
Arrange these petals around the flower center, with each petal overlapping the one before it. Bend the top of the petals outward a bit to give a more natural flower appearance.
If you prefer a larger flower, then make a few more petals and add them on. Keep adding until you reach your desired size and are happy with the overall balance of the flower.
3. Cut away the stem
Roll the stem back and forth between your thumb and forefinger, holding it near the top of the stem so the top end gets thinner and flattens out a bit.
Then use a sharp edge to cut the flower off the stem.
4. Bake
Polymer clay needs to be cured, so bake your polymer clay flowers according to the instructions on the packaging.
Once baked, you can attach these wild roses to jewelry items or any other accessories you'd like to embellish.

Of course, you don’t have to restrict yourself to just 2 colors for your flowers. Learn how to make the multicolored version of the rose here. Feel free to use whatever and however many colors you want!
Enjoy making these polymer clay flowers and leave a comment to let me know how you used yours.
