I’ll teach you in this leather necklace knot tutorial step-by-step instructions on how to make the knots. Here’s how to make a leather necklace that you’ll be proud to wear or give as a gift!

Tools and materials:

  • 5½ yards or 5 meters of 2mm brown leather cord
  • 7 silver beads
  • Clasp
  • Jump rings
  • Crimp ends
  • Chain
  • Scissors
  • Pliers
  • Ruler
  • Tape
Measuring the leather cord lengths

1. Cut the leather cords

Measure the leather cord. Each one should be a little over a yard (1 meter) long.

Cutting the leather cords

Cut the leather cord into 4 parts.

Taping 4 lengths of cords to the table

2. Braid the cords

Gather the 4 cords so they are equal at the top. Cut a piece of tape (masking or painter's tape) and tape the 4 cords.

Making a 4-strand braid with the leather cord

Begin by doing a 4-strand braid, working your way down to about 5 inches or 12 cm in length. If you're not sure how to do this kind of braid, watch the video.

Measuring the length of the braid

Measure the braid so you know its exact length.

3. Make the knots

Divide the cords into 2. Make a right knot: tucking the cords under, securing the cords on the right side, and looping the left cords around.

These are the same types of knots you do in macrame. Keep it as flat as possible.

Then make a left knot, tucking the cords under, securing the left cords, and looping the right cords around.

4. Add the silver beads

Add a silver bead to the right of the 2-strand cord group. Hold it while looping the other cords around.

5. Continue the knotting pattern

Repeat this technique (right knot, left knot, silver bead, tuck, empty knot) until you’ve placed all 7 silver beads. Once the 7 beads are in, make 2 right and 2 left knots to finish.

Braiding the opposite end of the necklace

6. Braid the end

Once the knotting is completed, continue the 4 strand braid until the length is equal to the other side of the necklace - about 5 inches or so.

Trimming the excess leather cord

Trim the excess so they are equivalent.

Adding crimp ends to the leather necklace

7. Finish the necklace

Place crimp ends on either side of the necklace on the braided area. Secure them with the pliers.

Adding chain pieces and jump rings

Add the chain and jump rings to one end with the pliers.

Adding a clasp to the leather cord necklace

Attach a clasp on the other end.
