posted on : November 3, 2023

The winter season may not be the most fashionable time of the year but that doesn’t mean you can’t look your best! With the perfect coat, you can step out in style and stay warm and cozy all season long. In this article, we’ll explore seven stylish winter coats for women that will keep you looking fashionable and feeling warm.

We’ll discuss the range of prices, features, and colors so you know what to look for and what to avoid. From stylish down coats and long puffer jackets to wool coats, my guide includes something for everyone. So if you want to look fabulous while staying warm this winter, read on for my tips!

Dress Coat

J. Crew Factory winter coat for women

Let’s start off our winter coats for women with the dress coat. Even if you have a casual lifestyle, I suggest every woman have one nice dress coat. My go-to for this type of coat is J. Crew Factory. This wool-blend lady day coat in black is the perfect basic.

I recommend a winter dress coat that skims the body and accentuates your shape. Notice how the long button down style elongates the body and the subtle waistband gives shape. Don’t be afraid to size up to get the fit you need in order to wear a thicker sweater underneath. When trying on coats, wear the type of shirt that you would most likely be wearing under the coat to get the best fit.

You can certainly spend hundreds of dollars on a quality dress coat, but J.Crew has the quality at a moderate price. This is a polyester/wool blend that is fully lined. It features gold functional buttons and a nice waistband to give you some shape. Reviews say that this runs slightly small and I would agree. I sized up one size from my usual size 10 to a 12, which was especially needed for the buttons across my chest.

This coat also comes in pink and dark green…all the colors are stunning!

Mid-Length Coat

A warm mid-length coat is another must have for winter. Depending on the climate you live in, this may be all you need for most winter days. I live in Georgia, so this is a nice weight coat for our typical moderate climate. We will get to the warmer coats a little later.

This red plaid coat from Loft Outlet (last year) is a good example. Here are some similar red plaid coats available this year…

Time And Tru Plaid Coat for women

Winter coats for women do not have to cost a fortune! For a budget friendly option, this lavender plaid coat by Time And Tru is available at Walmart. It’s only $39.98 and comes in this lilac color and also a cream neutral plaid that is very pretty.

The sizing on this style is very large. I typically wear a medium or large and I sized down to a small in this one. Sizes are available in XS-3X.

Lady Jacket

J. Crew Factory Lady Jacket

The “lady jacket” is a classic boxy shaped type of blazer that you will be seeing lots of this fall and winter. This may not be a good outer layer if you live in a severe winter climate, but I wanted to mention this as a good layering piece.

You can find them just about everywhere at all different price points. This blue tweed caught my eye at J.Crew Factory, and I paired it with their denim trouser pants for an elevated casual look. I’m wearing both the jacket and jeans in a size 10.

Lady Jacket

Fun, Faux Fur Jacket

While certainly not a necessity, a faux fur jacket is a fun piece to have in your wardrobe. I found a very affordable one at Walmart for only $19.98.

It’s by No Boundaries, which is a junior brand so size up for a good fit. I’m wearing a size large. This one comes in black and champagne, but I thought the black looked a little more high end. This jacket has a bomber jacket cut with a front zipper and a shorter length.

Puffer Jacket

A puffer jacket is another casual style that you will want to have for a warmer option. These are available at many different price points, so I will link several for you to browse. Puffer jackets can be a little tricky to style as they can add visual weight. I try to find a puffer that has a cinched waist or one that doesn’t fit too oversized.

I’ve really enjoyed this budget friendly puffer jacket from Walmart. I purchased it last year and I have worn it a lot. They brought it back again this year in some different colors/prints. Here is the winter floral and champagne color.

This shimmer puffer jacket from J.Crew Factory is so pretty. It glows like an opal!

A puffer vest is the ideal piece for a walk on a cool day. Also these are good for sports as they don’t interfere with your arm movement. I purchased this black one from Amazon.

I wanted one that was long enough to wear with leggings, and this one is the right length. I’m wearing a size large and it comes in two other colors.

Heavy Winter Coats

As a southern girl, I’m no expert on heavy winter coats because I rarely need one. I did, however, experience a rare extreme cold spell last December when the highs during the day were in the 20’s! I was thankful for my heavier winter coat. I don’t think I could ever find an exact dupe for the purple coat above (Talbots), but here are some similar styles.

The warmest coat I have ever owned is my North Face Coat. I wore it to New York during the winter and it kept me warm all day. Mine is several years old, but this one is very similar. This is an investment piece, but if you are traveling to a bitter cold climate, or live in one it is money well spent.

Some of my favorite places to shop heavier winter coats are Talbots and Columbia. Here are some to browse.

So we have seen 7 types of winter coats for women at many different price points. I hope this helps you choose the perfect winter coat for your cold weather needs. Winter coats also make great holiday gifts!
