How to Make a DIY Distress Tool for Jeans Out of a BBQ Cleaning Brush

Before you throw those burgers on your barbecue, check out this tutorial to learn how to use your barbecue tools as a distress tool for jeans! This is the easiest way to distress jeans that you’ll ever find! Let's get started.
Tools and materials:
- Pair of jeans
- Wooden block
- X-ACTO knife
- Metal BBQ cleaning tool
- Water and bleach
1. Prepare your jeans
Use chalk to mark the areas on your jeans for distressing. Think about the areas that would naturally become worn out over time, like the knees, around the pockets, or anywhere that the jeans would naturally bend as you move around or sit down.
Insert a block of wood in the jeans to give you a hard surface under the spot you want to distress.
Use an X-ACTO knife to carefully cut through the marks on your jeans.
2. Now comes the BBQ hack!
Grab a BBQ cleaning tool with metal bristles and brush over the cuts you just made to fray the edges of those cuts.
You can also use the scraper tool on your BBQ cleaning brush to scrape away at your denim, adding to the distressed look.
3. Finish with a bleach bath
To complete the worn-out, aged, distressed look, soak your jeans in a bath of warm water and bleach for an hour or two (or longer, depending on how worn out you want your jeans to look.)
When you are happy with the color, launder your jeans as usual. Laundering will also help fray the edges a bit more.
4. Great ways to wear your distressed jeans
Here are some great pairings for your distressed jeans:
- Wear them with an oversized t-shirt and cardigan
- Layer your jeans over leggings and a bodysuit
- Wear colorful tights under your distressed jeans and pair them with a coordinating vintage blouse.
