Simple Sewing Pattern Tutorial To Make Wide Leg Pants

Today, I have an easy sewing pattern for wide leg pants for you. The special tie waist design means these DIY pants fit all sizes without using elastic.

Tools and materials:

  • (230 cm) length of 36 inch (90 cm) wide crepe fabric
  • Lightweight fusible interfacing
  • 6 snap fasteners
  • Fabric marker
  • Measuring tape
  • Ruler
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Drinking straw
  • Hand sewing needle and thread
  • Sewing machine

1. Pants pattern

Trim your fabric to 84 inches (210 cm) long.

Fold it in half widthways and then lengthways so you have four layers, 42 inches (105 cm) long by 18 inches (45 cm) wide.

Lay the fabric flat with the main fold towards you and cut open the two folds at one side edge.

Mark 12 inches (30 cm) from one side along the folded edge and the open edge opposite it.

Hold a ruler between the marks and draw a line 4 inches (10 cm) long from the open edge.

Draw a line at right angles to it to the nearest side edge and curve the inner corner where they meet.

Cut along the curved line.

Open the fabric at the fold and remove half an inch (1 cm) from one of the inner leg seams. This will be the front of the pants.

2. Waist darts

Measure 1 1/4” (3 cm) down from the waist edge at the center front.


Draw a tapered line to the center back and cut along the line to shape the waist.

Measure 4 inches (10 cm) along the waist edge from the center front.

Draw a dart 4 inches (10 cm) deep and 0.8 inches (2 cm) wide.

Transfer the marks to the underneath of the bottom layer.

Draw two darts in the same way on the back waist edge, making them 1 1/4” (3 cm) wide.

Separate the layers and sew the four darts with the right side inside.


Press the darts to one side.

3. Assemble the pants

Place the two pieces together with the right sides facing.


Pin and sew the center front and center back seams.

Refold the pants with the seams in the center and sew the inner leg seams.

4. Waistband

Cut a strip of fabric long enough to fit around the waist edge and 4 inches (10 cm) wide.


Iron fusible interfacing to the wrong side.


Join the waistband into a circle with the right sides facing and press the seam open.

Fold the waistband in half lengthways with the wrong side inside and press.


With the seam at the center back, pin the waistband to the right side of the waist edge of the pants, aligning the raw edges. Sew in place.

Hand sew three snap fasteners inside the waistband either side of the center front and back seams, so that they fasten comfortably around your waist.

5. Waist ties

Cut two strips of fabric, each 20 inches (50 cm) long by 3.5 inches (9 cm) deep.

Fold them in half lengthways with the right side inside and sew the long edge and one short edge.

Use a straw to turn them right side out and press them flat.

Close the snap fasteners and pin the raw edge of each tie to the side edges of the waistband on the right side, with the raw edge facing towards the center front.

Sew the ties in place with a vertical line of stitches.

Fold them back along the stitching lines so the raw edges are covered and sew them down.


Turn up a narrow double hem on each leg.

To wear, fasten the snap fasteners around your waist.


Wrap the excess waistband to the back and tie the ends at the back or cross them over, bring them forward and tie them at the front.


These wide leg pants drape so beautifully and I love the way they move! Use a medium weight crepe fabric for the best effect.
