Tools and materials:

DIY skirt with pockets

I only just found this dress the other day. What’s amazing is that the print is actually woven into the fabric. As a dress, It was just too long and a piece that I would never wear so I thought why not refashion it into a skirt?

Plan

Planning ahead is an important step when doing a refashion project. After coming up with a few plans I decided to stick to the most simple one. I would remove the bodice, add a casing for an elastic with a cute ruffle on top, and create some pockets to add to the new skirt.

Easy DIY skirt

Remove the bodice

So first up, I grabbed a pair of scissors and cut off the bodice of the dress.

Try it on

Try it on

Before I could move on to the casing, I decided to try on the skirt. I realized I wanted a more A-line style a bit tighter around the waist so I pinned the fabric and took it in.

Trim off the seam allowances

I went ahead and trimmed off all the seam allowances and finished the edges.

Sew the casing

Sew the casing

I measured and pinned the casing at the top of the waist. I then went ahead and sewed it in place.

Add elastic

Next, I went ahead and thread the elastic through the casing.

Add pockets

I decided to use the bodice from the dress and somehow create pockets. I first deconstructed the bodice and made two matching pieces from the front of the bodice.

I came up with an awesome idea for the pockets. I took the two pieces and sort of replicated the front of the original bodice. I folded over the edges to make the pocket. I then did a double fold with the fabric on top which would allow me to make pockets that tied together with the ties from the bodice.

I adore this skirt! I am so excited that I get to add this piece to my closet! My favorite detail is definitely the pockets. Share your favorite detail from this refashioning project in the comments below!
