DIY fitted mini skirt

Adjust the pattern

To start this mini skirt, I drew a ¼ seam allowance on each side of the centerline down my mini skirt pattern which you can learn how to make here

Fold the pattern

Cut out the fabric

I then folded the pattern along the seam line so that the left side was under the right side.

Cut the fabric

Next, I placed the pattern on one layer of the fabric and cut around it. I cut one layer only because I don’t want this skirt to have a mirror image on the front and back side. I then went ahead and cut a second piece for the opposite back side of the skirt, making it a little longer.

Refold the pattern

Next, I opened up the pattern and folded it at the seam allowance line to the right of the centerline. I then went ahead and cut out a front and slightly bigger back piece of the plain black fabric.

I cut out the waistband, adding notches to the fold.

Fold the strip

This next step is optional, but I had cut an extra small strip of the striped fabric by mistake so I thought why not incorporate it somehow. I folded the strip, right sides together and pinned.

Sew the front pieces

I then took the front right and left pieces and pinned them along the center front. I repeated the same for the two back pieces. I then went ahead and sewed along my pinned lines on the front and back pieces as well as on the little strip.

Fold the waistband

Next, I folded the waistband, right sides together, pinned, and sewed it down. I also took a piece of elastic and pinned and sewed it as well.

Once all the pieces were sewed, I made sure to turn the little striped strip right side out.

Place the two sides together

I placed the front of the skirt over the back, right sides together, and sewed along the side seams.

Pin the waistband

Pin the waistband

I turned my skirt, right side out, and moved on to work on the waistband. I matched up the seam of the waistband with the seam of the elastic and pinned the elastic inside the waistband. I folded the waistband horizontally over the elastic as I pinned it so that it encased the elastic.

Add D rings

Add on D rings

Once I had pinned the waistband, I cut the little strip of fabric in half and thread it through a D ring. I pinned the strip to the center of the front, black side of my skirt, and did the same on the striped back of the skirt.

Sew on the waistband

Sew on the waistband

I pinned my waistband to the top of the skirt and sewed it on. While I was at my sewing machine, I also hemmed the bottom of my skirt. I decided to draw a tiny heart on the waistband to differentiate between the front and the back.
