How to Sew a Cute Mini Skirt + Make Your Own Pattern

Here, I'm sharing how to make a simple 6 panel DIY mini skirt from 1.25 yards (1 meter) of fabric. I used viscose to make this bright yellow skirt that moves beautifully.
There is no zipper, just a simple elasticated waistband that makes it a perfect project for someone new to sewing. Measurements given are for size 38 - 40.
Let's get started!
Tools and materials:
- 1.25 yards (1 meter) lightweight fabric
- 2 inch (5 cm) wide elastic
- Tailor's chalk
- Ruler/straight edge
- Pins
- Scissors
- Large safety pin
- Sewing machine
- Serger (optional)
1. Mini skirt pattern
Cut two rectangles of fabric, each 39 inches (1 meter) by 17 inches (43 cm).
Fold them in half widthways and lay them flat with the folded edge towards you. Pin them together to stop them moving when you cut them.
From the fold, mark 4 inches (10 cm) along one side and 8 inches (20 cm) along the other side.
Join the two points with a straight line. Cut along the line.
2. Cut panels
Unfold the pieces you've just cut, flip them over and place them over the remaining fabric, matching the diagonal cut edges.
Cut through all layers along the other edge, so you have 6 identical skirt panels.
Mark and cut a gentle curve at the waistband and hem.
3. Join skirt pieces
Lay the 6 skirt pieces in a semicircle. With the right sides together, pin the 5 side seams together. Join the first piece to the last to form a circle.
Sew the side seams and finish the edges.
4. Waistband
Cut a strip from the remaining fabric, 46 inches (116 cm) by 3 inches (8 cm).
Cut a length of elastic to fit comfortably around your waist.
Sew the two short ends of the waistband together with right sides facing.
Fold the waistband in half lengthways with wrong sides together.
With right sides facing, sew the raw edges of the waistband to the waist edge of the skirt, leaving a small opening at the center back.
Insert a safety pin into one end of the elastic and use it to thread the elastic through the waistband.
Join the two ends of elastic and stitch the opening in the waistband closed.
5. Hem
Serge or sew a zigzag stitch around the lower edge of the skirt.
Turn up a narrow hem and sew it on the wrong side.
Mini skirt pattern
Viscose is a slippery fabric so a beginner may want to use a cotton polyester mix, which is easier to handle.
This short skirt is super cute, very quick to make and looks great on its own or layered over tights. It's such a versatile mini skirt pattern that I hope you'll make a few of them in different fabrics.
