Tools and materials:
- Scissors
- Blanket fabric
- Sewing machine
- Matching thread
- Measuring tape
1. Stitch the raw edges
If you’re using a plaid-like blanket material, it’s best to stitch around the raw edges so that the ends don’t fray.
2. Measure the DIY vest
Fold your fabric in half and measure the corner.
Measure across by about 18 inches. Then, from the 18-inch mark, measure 9 inches down and make another mark. This will be for the shoulder area.
When you open the fabric, you should have a center mark (where the fold was) and two shoulder marks on either side.
Then, draw an armhole. You can measure your shoulder to armhole area to get an idea of how big and long it should be.
3. Cut the armholes
Once you’ve drawn the armhole area, go ahead and cut it. I did eyeball the measurements, but as I mentioned, it’s good practice to measure beforehand.
To cut the armhole for the other side, use that piece of cut fabric, flip it around, so it’s reversed, and cut around the shape. This way, your armholes will be the same size.
I had to adjust the armholes; they were way smaller than I thought. The trick is to start small and adjust as needed. If you cut a big hole, you won’t be able to adjust it.
4. Finish off the armholes
As mentioned, this fabric frays a lot. So, it’s a good idea to head on over to your sewing machine and finish off the armholes with a zigzag stitch.
Then, trim off any extra frays.

I like your idea a lot, and it looks great on you. If you had a little extra blanket fabric to make binding for the cut edges, that would elevate the look. I might even try sleeves, because I’m cold looking at the short-sleeved tee. I think I’m gonna need a bigger blanket! Seriously, love the look, especially with the belt, which gives it an Outlander vibe—always a good thing in my book. 👍👍
