Here's how to make a Ruffled Tote Bag out of a Jean Skirt! I know in some areas it's cold and snowing but here in Cali it was in the 80 today. I want to be outside at the beach, or the antique flea Market or shopping or having lunch and ice tea on a patio with a girl friend, don't you?? Here's a great Ruffled Tote Bag you can make for just that type of day!!
1. Find a cute ruffle denim jean skirt. I found this one at a Thrift Store for $3. Score!! They always have lots of them. I love Rachel Ashwell’s Simply Shabby Chic pink roses fabrics and make a lot of pretty things with her fabrics so I pulled this out of my fabric stash. You can use anything you like, of course, prints, plaids, black, checks, zebra, skulls. . . . .whatever tickles your fancy. 3. I stitched the pockets closed so they would lay flat. 4. Measure and cut your ruffle the same with as the ruffles on your skirt plus 3/4″ inch. Hem the strip of fabric for the ruffle. 5. Gather the fabric for your ruffle and attach in between ruffles of your skirt. Fold over and press. 6. Sew bottom of skirt closed. I left the inside as is, but if you want get fancy you could add a lining inside too. 7. Cut strips for your straps. I cut them about 6″ wide. Then fold over, right sides together and sew leaving ends open. 8. Turn ends under and pin onto inside of your waist band. Sew it on and keep in mind denim is thick and take your time, or you might break your needle like I did.
9. I used the same width and doubled my length to make a tie belt. I thought this would be great to cinch in when I really wanted to, or loosen when needed. You can tie in a bow or leave long and let the ties hang down. Come on over to the blog for more details.
Happy Shopping. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day, Lisa

I make purses out of old jeans and sell them at crafts shows. Usually, I leave the pockets open for cell phones, keys etc. Saves having to add pockets to the inside. Beautiful job on this purse.

I have a child's skirt I can use to do this with. :) Thank you for sharing, I've wondered just how to do it for some time...I saved this a while ago, but now I have both the time and the skirt and it's a go. Blessings!
