Here, I’m going to show you how to take a $1 basic white t-shirt into an elevated top for going out.

We’re going to be cutting up the top and adding elastic to completely transform the look.

Tools and materials:

  • White t-shirt
  • Scissors
  • Tailor’s chalk
  • Tape measure
  • Ruler
  • Clips
  • Flat elastic cord
  • Safety pin
  • Sewing machine
Removing sleeves

1. Remove sleeves

Start by turning the t-shirt inside out and then cut off the sleeves right along the seam.

Marking the sides

2. Mark the sides

Next, mark about 4 inches (10cm) under the armhole along the seamline.

Marking the bottom

3. Mark the bottom

Find the midpoint of the bottom of the top and then mark 2 inches (5cm) from the left to the right of the midpoint, creating a 4-inch (10cm gap).

Joining the marks

4. Join the marks

Then connect the marks on the bottom to the ones on the sides using a ruler.

Marking the armholes

5. Mark the armholes

Make the right sleeve scrunch by marking 2 inches (5cm) from the neckline and 1 inch (2.5cm) below the armhole.

Then connect the points with a curved line. You only want to do this on the right side of the top.

Cutting top

6. Cut top

Next, cut along all of the markings.

Creating channels

7. Create channels

To create the channels for the elastic, fold the two bottom sides in by half an inch (1.3cm) and clip the material in place.

Sewing

8. Sew

Sew along where you’ve clipped. Before sewing the channel for the sleeve, cut an incision of half an inch (1.3cm).

Then pin the channel and sew. After that, hem the non-ruched sleeve.

Bringing elastic through channels

9. Bring elastic through channels

Attach a safety pin to one side of the elastic and pass it through the channels.

Adjusting ruching

10. Adjust the ruching

Lastly, adjust the ruching to your liking, and you’re done!

Now you have a sexy little white basic t-shirt that can go with anything in your closet.

You can leave the elastic hanging down as I have, or cut it shorter, or tie it in a bow.

I love how we’ve completely transformed a plain white t-shirt into something totally different.
