This pipa knot jewelry is made with a unique Chinese macrame technique that is based on a figure eight. In this tutorial, I will be showing you how to create this knot with a doubled wire for a unique and lovely effect.

Tools and materials:

  • Round nose pliers
  • Chain nose pliers
  • Cutting tool
  • Ruler
  • 22 gauge wire (0.6 mm diameter)
  • French hooks

Measure and bend

Cut 70 centimeters (28 inches) of wire. Fold the wire in half. Measure 5.5 centimeters (2 inches) from the loop at the end. Then bend the looped end upwards and behind the wire at the 5.5-centimeter point. Bending the wire around a circular object of similar size can make this easier to get a smooth teardrop shape.

How to make a pipa knot

Twist

Twist the long end of the doubled wire around the loop and bring it to the front.

Make another teardrop

Bring the doubled wire down into the teardrop, and make another smaller teardrop directly inside the first one.

Twist

Twist the wire around the loop again, below the first twist.

Tighten

Use chain nose pliers to squeeze the wires into place.

Do it twice more

Continue making teardrops inside the previous one and twisting the wire around the loop for two more rounds.

Cut and tuck

Cut the wires when they reach the front of the pendant. Then tuck the excess wire through the center of the teardrops.

Tighten

Give the wires a final squeeze with chain nose pliers to secure everything in place.

Widen the loop

With round nose pliers, adjust the loop at the top of the pendant so it’s rounded and centered.

Attach french hooks

Open the loop at the end of the french hook, and insert the loop at the top of the pendant. Then squeeze it closed with chain-nosed pliers.

Your Chinese macrame knot earrings are complete! You can use the same method with a wider gauge of wire to make a pendant for a necklace or keychain or add elements of your choice around the edges.
