Today, I want to show you how to accessorize an outfit, especially for beginners. Finding cute accessories to wear is something I love to do and I'm sharing some of my favorite pieces and how I style them with you.

Accessories are a great way to express your personality and give a unique look to your outfits.

They cost less than an entire outfit but they can completely change it. They can enhance or detract from your overall look, so let's look at how to choose the right pieces for you.

Belts

1. Belts

You can use a belt to balance the overall proportions of your look, depending on how and where you place it.

For example here I'm using a belt to make my loose vest look more fitted. This also makes me appear taller and slimmer by cinching in my waist.

Belts

Make sure your belts are of good quality and in good condition. Also try to avoid ones with a large logo, as they can look outdated quite quickly.

If you want to invest in a designer belt, I'd suggest something more timeless and elegant like this Hermes one.

Here you can see how a button down shirt and jeans can be elevated just by adding a belt.

And here I've used a very different type of belt to make this outfit very special and unique.

Belts can really express your personality and become your trademark.

Plain dress

A plain dress is often uninspiring but the minute you start accessorizing it, it's completely transformed.

Dress with belt

A belt can give it more definition and give you a flattering hourglass shape.

I certainly don't have a perfect body but I've learned how to compensate for that with styling techniques that can be very effective.

Bags

2. Bags

I recently bought this bag that really uplifts a casual outfit. With a big bag like this, color is especially important. The bag should enhance the overall look, not overwhelm it.

Watches

3. Watches

A nice watch can be an integral part of your outfit. It can be the perfect piece to make an outfit look more expensive.

A key factor to take into account when choosing a watch for an outfit is the occasion. If I'm wearing something casual, I'll look for a watch that includes natural materials like a leather strap.

If I'm wearing something smart, I would pair it with a more elegant piece.

Scarves

4. Scarves

If you'd like to add color to an outfit but you're not sure of how, wearing a scarf is a safe way to start doing so.

As scarves are usually worn around your neck, choose your most flattering colors and avoid the ones that wash you out.

Scarves

A scarf should be the focal point of your outfit. Opt for classic prints like polka dots, stripes or paisleys and avoid clashing prints with your outfit.

Scarves

I tend to prefer smaller scarves and just tie a three point knot the French way, but obviously you can choose larger pieces and tie them more elaborately.

Scarves

Scarves don't have to be limited to your neck either. You can embellish your bag or wear one as a belt, on your wrist or even in your hair.

Just make sure it goes with your personality and you feel comfortable wearing it.

Jewelry

5. Jewelry

These days, I prefer jewelry that resembles the real thing. That's why it's important to know yourself and choose pieces that resonate with you.

Jewelry

There's still a place for the bold pieces. I got these earrings just a couple of years ago and I get compliments every time I wear them. They're perfect to elevate a simple LBD.

When you wear something like this, don't wear other pieces that would compete with it. When wearing these earrings for example, my only other jewelry would be a watch.

Jewelry

It's amazing how one simple but dramatic piece can completely change the look and proportions of an outfit.

This necklace draws the eye up to my face and so elongates the upper half of my body.

How to accessorize

If you haven't considered accessorizing before, I hope I've convinced you that you're missing out on one of the most valuable styling tools.

It can be a bit intimidating at first, but once you've mastered the art of accessorizing, it takes no time to do.

I can give you suggestions and guidelines, but ultimately you have to find the pieces that make your heart sing.

I would love to know what your favorite accessories are in the comments below. It's always lovely to hear from you.
