Make a DIY Face Mask in Just a Few Straightforward Steps

Feel like you can’t breathe with a disposable face mask? I have just the solution for you. Make a breathable, DIY face mask in a matter of minutes! You also don’t need to buy fabric; you really require just a few fabric pieces. So, if you have any fabric lying around, now is the perfect time to use it. Also, you can use fabric from an old clothing item to make this easy face mask. Just make sure it’s not thick and that it is breathable. Ready? Let’s sew a face mask!
Tools and materials:
- Fabric mask for pattern
- Fabric from old clothing items
- Measuring tape
- Elastic
- Scissors
- Thread
- Sewing Machine
Cut the fabric
You need 4 pieces of fabric measuring 20cm x 15cm ( 7.8 x 5.9 inches). I suggest folding the fabric when you only have to cut this out once or twice. I am upcycling fabric from the sleeve area, so I only had to do this twice.
Duplicate the pattern
I am using an old face mask as a guide to duplicate and trace the pattern on the fabric pieces. Fold the mask in half, pin the sides, and place it on the fabric piece. Add seam allowance. Get the exact measurements in the image, as shown.
Cut the fabric
Once you have traced the pattern on the fabric, cut it according to the pattern.
Pin and sew
You should now have 4 pieces of fabric. Put two fabrics together, right sides facing each other, and sew along the curved edge. Repeat the same steps on the other pair.
Assemble the mask
Once the curves are stitched, put two pieces right sides facing. Align both fabrics on the center line and start pinning all the way around.
Sew along the upper and bottom sides, leaving the side edges open.
Turn the mask inside out.
Press the face mask to clear iron out any creases.
Add the elastic
Before attaching the elastic, prep the edges, fold the edge in once, and press the fold.
Cut and insert an elastic band measuring approximately 14cm (5.5 inches). Then sew the edges. You should have 2 elastic bands, one for each side.
TIP-
If you don’t have an elastic band, you can cut strips from old clothes with stretch fabric. Also, you can use a ribbon or a hair tie.
We’re finally done with the DIY face mask! It’s so comfy, amazing, and easy to wear as it’s breathable. I hope you enjoyed this quick face mask tutorial, and now that you know how to sew a face mask easily, you can make a whole collection for your family and friends, so they too feel comfortable while keeping safe.
