How to Make a Comfortable 3D DIY Sleep Mask (Free Sewing Pattern)

Quality sleep is absolutely essential! That is why today I have a DIY sleep mask tutorial for you. Follow these instructions to make your very own cute and comfortable sleep mask.

Tools and materials:

  • Sewing machine 
  • Pencil for tracing 
  • Needle and thread
  • Cotton fabric 
  • Linen fabric 
  • Quilted padding fabric 
  • 1.2 x 39cm (0.5 x 15 inches) long elastic band 
  • Fabric scissors

DIY sleep eye mask sewing pattern

1. Cut the fabric 

Cut out four separate pieces of fabric in your desired sleep mask shape. Make sure to leave 1cm (0.4 inches) for seam allowance. 


The four pieces of fabric will be the outer fabric, inner fabric, dark fabric, and padding. The inner fabric should be cotton, the outer fabric should be linen and the padding should be quilted.

2. Pair the fabric

Lay the outer fabric on top of your dark fabric and your inner fabric on top of the padding.

3. Fold 

Fold the right side of the outer fabric pair to the center and clip the edges in place. Sew along the clips in a curve. Repeat with the other side.

4. Trim

Trim off the edges along the seam using fabric scissors.

Repeat steps three through six with the inner fabric and padding pair.

5. Attach the elastic 

Sew the elastic band to the edge of either side of the inner fabric. Make sure it is not crooked. 


The elastic band should be 1.2 x 39cm (0.5 x 15 inches) long.

6. Layer

Once the elastic is attached, fold it up neatly in the center of the inner fabric and then layer the outer fabric pair on top.

7. Pin

Place one clip on either side of the mask and two clips on the seams on either side. Also, put a pin in the center.

8. Sew

Sew along the clips, removing them as you go. Make sure to leave a gap along the bottom center.

9. Trim 

Trim off any excess fabric along the seam.

10. Turn right side out 

Turn the mask right side out by pulling the fabric out through the gap that you left earlier.

11. Close the gap

Sew up the gap in the fabric by hand.
