Quick DIY Bow Scrunchies to Make With Scrap Fabric

Tools and materials:

• Scrap fabric
• Elastic
• Two safety pins
• Scissors
• Thread
• Measuring tape
• Fabric chalk or pen
• Sewing machine

Prepare the fabric for the scrunchy

I started by cutting a piece of fabric that was 50 centimeters (19.5 inches) long, and eight centimeters (three and a quarter inches) wide.

Fold, pin and sew 

I folded the fabric in half lengthwise, and then pinned and sewed the long edges together, leaving the ends open.

Turn the fabric right side out

To hide the seam, I attached a safety pin to one open end of the fabric and pushed the pin through to the other open end.

I scrunched the fabric over the pin until the pin came out the other side.

Then I pulled the pin through, pulling the fabric through after it, and turning it right side out.

Iron the fabric and cut the elastic

I ironed the fabric flat and prepared a 12 centimeter (four and three-quarter inches) length of elastic.

Insert the elastic into the fabric

I attached a safety pin to one end of the elastic, and inserted it into one open end of the fabric, using it to move the elastic along the inside.

Once the elastic was inside the fabric strip, I used a second safety pin to attach the other end of the elastic to the opening of the fabric strip, so it would stay in place, and not get pulled all the way through the strip.

Then I guided the first safety pin all the way through the fabric, scrunching the fabric over the elastic until the safety pin came out the other end.

Sew the ends of the elastic together

I removed the safety pins from both ends of the elastic and sewed the ends of the elastic together.

Sew the ends of the fabric strip together

I tucked one open end of the fabric into the other open end and stitched it closed.

Prepare the fabric for the bow

Next, I cut a piece of fabric 60 centimeters (23.5 inches) long and ten centimeters (four inches) wide.

Fold the fabric

I folded the fabric in half lengthwise.

Measure three centimeters (one inch)

I measured three centimeters (one inch) from either end of the fabric strip and marked it with a fabric pen.

Cut a diagonal piece off either end

From the three centimeter marks, cut a diagonal piece from either end. The cuts should be parallel to each other. On one end, I began the cut on the open edge of the fabric and cut towards the corner of the folded edge. And on the other end of the fabric, I began the cut from the folded edge and cut towards the corner of the open edge.

Pin and sew the fabric

I pinned the fabric together along the open edges, including the short edges, but left a gap in the middle of the long edge. This opening will allow me to turn the fabric right side out, once it’s sewn together. 

Sew it together

I sewed the fabric for the bow closed, making sure to leave an opening in the center.

Turn the fabric right side out

Using the tip of a scissor, I pushed the fabric from the end of the strip towards the opening in the center and pulled the end through. Then I repeated the process on the other side of the strip.

Push the corners out

Again using the scissor, I inserted the point into the opening in the middle of the fabric and pushed the tip into the corners to make the corners sharp and neat. I repeated this process on both ends of the fabric.

Iron the fabric

I ironed the fabric flat.

Sew up the opening

Now that I no longer needed the opening, I sewed it closed. Then it was time to put everything together!

Tie the bow onto the scrunchy

I pulled the fabric for the bow through the middle of the scrunchie and tied a bow over the exposed seam, where I had sewn the ends together.

Make everything nice and neat

I played around with the fabric to make sure everything looked neat and straight and even.
