How to DIY a Jewel Headband and a Woven Headband
In this tutorial, we’ll be making two different kinds of padded headbands — a jewel headband and a woven headband.
Let’s get started!
Tools and materials:
- Foam
- Fabric
- Ribbon
- Fabric glue
- Tape ruler
- Scissors
- Embellishments
- Headbands
- Needle & thread
Jewel headband
1. Measure the headband
Measure your headband using a tape ruler. My headband is 14.5 inches.
2. Apply glue to the foam to make it thicker
Apply fabric glue to your foam and fold it to get the thickness you want.
I glued and folded mine four times. If your foam is thick enough, you don’t have to do this step. Trim the excess.
3. Glue the foam to the headband
Glue the headband to the foam. Trim off the excess on both sides, as well as both ends of the headband.
4. Measure and cut out 10 inches of foam
Measure ten inches of foam and fold it into three pieces. Trim the excess.
5. Apply glue to the additional foam
Apply glue to the inside and the outside of the foam.
6. Glue the foam to the headband
Glue the 10-inch foam to the top of the headband.
Trim the excess of the foam so it’s not bulky on the sides.
7. Cut your fabric to size
My fabric is 23 by 9 inches.
8. Apply glue to the top of the foam
Apply glue to the upper part of the foam.
Apply this excessively, but don’t let it stain or mess everything up.
9. Cover the headband with the fabric
Fold the fabric inward and stretch it along the headband to completely cover the foam.
10. Sew and glue
Sew the fabric inward, and apply more glue as needed.
Trim the excess as you go, and repeat this process until you get the desired result and shape.
Take your time with this step.
11. Clean up the edges
Sew the edges and clean it up so it’s nice and neat.
12. Apply glue to the ribbon
Cut out 15 inches of ribbon, and apply glue to the bottom part of the ribbon.
13. Attach the ribbon to the headband
Apply the ribbon to the part of the headband that you stitched together.
Let it lay flat and cut off the excess.
14. Apply ribbon to the ends
Cut 3 inches of ribbon and use glue to wrap it around the ends so they’re neat.
Don’t apply too much glue or it’ll be messy.
15. Add embellishments to your headband
For embellishments or accessories, you can use whatever you have. I’m using gems.
Arrange them in whatever way you desire on the headband. I sewed mine on with a needle and thread, but you can also use glue.
Here’s the finished jewel headband! I wanted to look like a queen with this headband, and it definitely delivers.
2. Woven headband
1. Measure the headband
Measure your headband using a tape ruler. My headband is 15 inches.
2. Cut and fold the foam
Cut your foam to size and fold it into two. I’m not using as much foam as in the first look.
3. Cut your fabric
My fabric is 21 inches long, and I’m cutting it so there’s an inch left on both sides of the foam.
4. Sew the fabric and foam to the headband
Lay down the headband and fold the fabric and foam over the headband. Sew it with a needle and thread.
Cut the excess fabric.
5. Measure 10.5 inches of fabric
Measure 10.5 inches of the folded excess fabric. Cut off any excess.
6. Fold and cut the fabric into three
Fold the fabric into three equal parts. Cut down the fold so you have three long pieces.
7. Fold and weigh down each strip
Fold each piece in half longwise. Stack them on top of each other and hold them down with a heavy object.
8. Weave
Weave the fabric. Make sure it’s loose and not too tight.
9. Sew the tips closed
Cut and sew the tip of the woven fabric.
10. Sew the woven fabric onto the headband
Place the woven fabric onto the headband and attach it to the side with needle and thread.
11. Loosen the weave
Use your fingers to loosen and thicken the weave so it covers the entire width of the headband.
12. Glue down the weaved fabric
Apply glue to the headband and attach the woven fabric to it so it doesn’t move.
13. Finish the edges with fabric
Wrap a piece of fabric 2 inches wide around the edges of the headband and sew it down.
Here’s the finished headband! I made this version out of old T-shirts, and it’s so cheap and easy to make!
