Tools and materials:
- Old pillowcase
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Fabric scissors
- Pins
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Chalk or fabric marker
1. Brim
Measure the circumference of your head and add about 1 inch for seam allowance.
This will be the width of the brim of your hat. Mark this measurement on the pillowcase.
Determine how deep you want the brim to be. Measure this distance and mark it all around. Cut along this marked line.
2. Top
Take the remaining portion of the pillowcase and fold it in half lengthwise with the right sides facing.
From the center point, measure and mark the distance from the center to the outer edge of the brim to determine the radius of the hat's crown.
Use this measurement to draw an arc from one edge to the other, creating a half-circle shape.
3. Sew
With the right sides facing, pin the edges of the brim together.
Sew along the pinned edge, leaving about a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Turn the brim right side out.
Pin the straight edge of the crown piece to the curved edge of the brim, right sides facing each other.
Stitch along the pinned edge, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
