I'm excited to guide you through the process of thrift-flipping an old pillowcase into a stylish bucket hat.

Get an adorable new hat without spending a dime. Grab a pillow case and let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Old pillowcase
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Fabric scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Chalk or fabric marker
Making brim

1. Brim

Measure the circumference of your head and add about 1 inch for seam allowance.

This will be the width of the brim of your hat. Mark this measurement on the pillowcase.

Determine how deep you want the brim to be. Measure this distance and mark it all around. Cut along this marked line.

Making top

2. Top

Take the remaining portion of the pillowcase and fold it in half lengthwise with the right sides facing.

From the center point, measure and mark the distance from the center to the outer edge of the brim to determine the radius of the hat's crown.

Use this measurement to draw an arc from one edge to the other, creating a half-circle shape.

3. Sew

With the right sides facing, pin the edges of the brim together.

Sew along the pinned edge, leaving about a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Turn the brim right side out.

Pin the straight edge of the crown piece to the curved edge of the brim, right sides facing each other.

Stitch along the pinned edge, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

I'd love to make this but having difficulty understanding the directions! I have the same questions as Kmw, and more. How does the measurement of the circumference of your head translate to "this will be the width of your brim"? Is that measurement used to make the circle for the top? If so, how? What pieces are cut from where on the pillowcase? When you say "Take the remaining part of the pillowcase and fold it lengthwise..." where on the pillowcase did the first piece(s) come from? Do you have a photo or sketch to show that? It looks like you topstitched the brim, nice! More photos and explanation would be appreciated! And the photo of your hands pinning fabric, is not explanatory, (if you are limited to how many photos you can post). Hope you can clarify! thanks!

It seems as though some of the pictures were not included, because I'm also confused! Would love to make a bucket hat out of pillow cases, if there's a way to update the instructions, it'd be great!
