How to Make a Twisted Headband in 5 Quick & Easy Steps
This twisted turban headband is easy to make and requires minimal cutting or sewing skills. Follow along with the tutorial as I show you how to make the twisted headband sewing pattern and then how to sew your own twisted headband. Let’s get started!
Tools and materials:
- Scrap fabric
- Sewing elastic
- Scissors
- Thread
- Sewing pins
- Sewing machine
- Iron
1. Cut the fabric
You will need to cut three pieces of fabric in the sizes shown in the above image. You will also need one piece of elastic band measuring 1 x 6 inches.
2. Sew the headband
Fold all three pieces of fabric in half lengthwise, with right sides facing in. Pin in place and then sew the long edges closed using a 1-centimeter (0.4-inch) seam allowance.
Then, turn all three pieces right sides out. Position the pieces so that the seam is at the top center and iron each piece flat.
3. Insert the elastic
Put a safety pin at one end of your 6-inch elastic and insert the elastic into one end of your short piece of fabric. Holding on to the other end of the elastic, continue pulling the elastic through the fabric.
When the elastic is all the way through the fabric, pin each end to hold it in place, and then sew the short edges.
Fold one of your 18-inch pieces of fabric in half widthwise, with the seam on the inside of the fold.
Place one end of your elastic piece in the center of one end of your folded piece, and then fold both edges of the larger piece over the end of the elastic piece.
Sew across the end in a straight line. Take your time because it is a bulky piece to sew.
This is what you will have when you’re done.
4. Create the twisted knot
Now slide the other 18-inch piece through the open loop formed by the folded piece.
Hold the two ends of the long piece together and pivot it so that you make a chain with the folded piece.
5. Assemble the twisted knot headband
Bring the loose end of the elastic piece to the middle of the edge of the second long piece. Fold in the sides over the elastic end and sew it in place just as did before.
Trim any excess fabric at the ends of the elastic pieces and clean up the edges with an overlock stitch.
Turn the elastic seam inside and pull the fabric to ensure the elastic is properly tucked in. Repeat on the other end of the elastic.
How to make a twisted headband
That’s all there is to it! This twisted turban headband is very stylish, and the elastic will help keep it in place on your head. It didn’t take much fabric to make, so it’s also a good use for your scrap fabric.
