How to Make a Twist Top: DIY Twist-Front Bandeau in 4 Easy Steps
In this tutorial, I will show you how to make a twist top. This is twist-front crop top is a simple sewing project, and the pattern is included.
If you’ve ever made a twist headband, this twist top is made much the same way, and it takes so little fabric, you probably have some scrap pieces that you can use.
Tools and materials:
- Fabric (preferably stretchy)
- Measuring tape
- Scissors
- Thread
- Sewing machine
1. Cut your fabric
Take your bust measurement as well as the measurement for the height you want your crop top to be. For me, that was 36 inches around and 9 inches top to bottom.
Now cut and hem your chosen fabric on all four sides to get the correct finished dimensions according to your measurements.
If your fabric is stretchy, cut it a couple of inches smaller than your bust measurement, so it will fit you snugly without gaping. I cut my stretchy fabric to 34 inches to fit a 36-inch bust.
If you don’t have a single strip of fabric that is long enough, cut three pieces to sew together, making the center piece the largest and the side pieces of equal size.
2. Create the twist
With the right side facing in, fold the fabric in half widthwise and mark the center of the side edges of the strip on the wrong side of the fabric.
Now take the corner of the side of the strip closest to you and line it up with the center point on the other side of the strip.
Then, the opposite end of the side at the back will line up with the center point of the first side.
Take the hanging edge of the back side and wrap it around to the front.
Take the remaining hanging piece and wrap it to the back. If you want to see this folding done from a different view, check the video from 4:38 to 5:28.
3. Sew
Sew the folded edges together.
4. Turn it right-side out
Turn it right-side out and like magic, there’s your twist!
How to make a twist top
Here’s the final look! You can add straps if you like, but I left mine strapless. Because I used stretchy fabric and cut it a bit smaller than my bust size, it fits perfectly and stays in place.
