In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to achieve a beach waves hairstyle. If you want to keep your hair wavy without it being super curly, here I’m going to show you how to do just that.

There are a few things that you have to take into consideration when you want to have more of a beach wave type of hair.

You don't need as much volume, and you don't need as much curl definition. Therefore your styling technique is going to be different than when you want to achieve a tight voluminous curly hairstyle.

What's really going to make a big difference in how your hair is going to end up looking is how you style and how you dry your hair.

Tools and materials:

  • Leave-in conditioner
  • Hair mask
  • Hair gel
  • Hairbrush
  • Mousse
  • Diffuser
Damp hair

1. Apply products to hair

Start by washing your hair and applying some leave-conditioner and a mask.

I applied these because I have high porosity hair, which means that my hair tends to dry out a lot, so I need to do things that will hydrate it a bit more.

Then rinse the two out and apply some cream gel in the shower while your hair is completely wet.

Brushing hair

2. Brush hair

Once your hair has dried a little bit, brush it through.

Because we’re going for beach waves, we don’t need a lot of volume, just a natural waviness.

Applying mousse

3. Apply mousse

Next, apply a nourishing hair styling mousse.

The one I’m using has lots of natural ingredients and is also UV protectant which is very important for me.

Comb the mousse with your fingers all throughout your hair.

Brushing hair

4. Brush hair

Proceed to brush through your hair. This will help distribute the product through your hair.

The goal here is to have your hair kind of straight. Then shake it gently and scrunch it a little bit.

Diffusing hair

5. Diffuse hair

The next step is very important, and it will either make or break your wavy style. That is how you're going to dry your hair.

The best way is to let your hair dry naturally, but if that isn’t an option, you can diffuse your hair. We don’t want a lot of volume, so the way you diffuse your hair is going to be key.

Usually, to get our defined curls with lots of volume, we would diffuse our hair with our head upside down or tilted it to the side to lift the roots to get that extra volume. We would clamp all of the curls into the diffuser and diffuse that so that the curls stay nicely formed.

Here, we’re going to do the opposite and diffuse the hair by having the diffuser go around the head without clumping the hair together.

The roots barely have any curl definition, which gives me a longer overall length to my hair.

If you’re worried that your roots will start to curl up more when they are about 50% dry, I recommend putting your fingers in your roots and gently combing them out.

If your hair starts to frizz up at all, you can add a tiny bit of gel, and that will help to hold it down.
