If volume is what you're after for your hair, I’ve got the perfect routine for you.

Follow along with my step-by-step tutorial to learn how to achieve a bouncy voluminous blowout.

Tools and materials:

  • Protective hair oil
  • Volumizing spray
  • Blow dryer
  • Paddle brush
Applying hair oil

1. Apply protective hair oil while your hair is wet

Starting with freshly washed hair, apply a small amount of protective hair oil, such as argan oil, to your wet locks.

Apply it to the ends of your hair and then, with whatever is left on your hands, run through toward your roots.

2. Apply volumizing spray

Give your hair a spritz with volumizing spray. It should also help protect the hair and will help it dry with a smoother finish.

3. Brush your hair

Brush your hair out with a paddle brush. If your hair tends to tangle when wet, opt for a wet brush or comb instead.

4. Dry with the grain of the hair

Part your hair how you prefer and use your blow dryer to just remove some of the excess moisture.

The key is to always blow dry the hair downward, to smooth the cuticles down. Drying against the direction of the hair will create frizz and flyaways.

Whichever way your hair is parted, grab a section, flip it to the opposite side with the paddle brush and continue to dry it in that direction.

Continue with more sections of hair.

Then with the heat still directed on this side, use your fingertips to lightly smooth the hair down.

Flip a section from the other side of the part over and continue drying with the grain of the hair.

If you want the volumized blowout to be more sleek, work with smaller sections of hair each time.

Also, make sure the hair is completely dry before moving on to the next section. For this tutorial, I wasn’t going for a particularly sleek look.

Flipping the hair back in place, you can already see this amazing volume:

5. Repeat on the other side

Repeat the same process on the other side of your part, flipping the hair, one section at a time, but drying with the grain.

6. Dry the back and bottom

Flip your head over and dry the hair at the base of your neck. Use the paddle brush to direct the hair as you do your at home blowout.

Then flip your hair back and dry the inside.

I go back and forth between flipping all the hair over and then flipping it back and drying to smooth it down.

7. Dry on cool

Press the cool button on your blow dryer and blast your hair with cool air to seal the cuticle. This makes it shinier and smoother.
